I would like to take my wife to Hawaii for our 25th anniversary. I would like to spend from 4 to 7 nights on Oahu and 7 nights on Maui or Kauai. WE would like to go in September or October of next year. Would I be able to rent from a timeshare owner at a reasonable rate during this time of the year and when should I start making firm plans?

I know many people say don't go to Oahu but I was born there and lived there till I was 13 so I would like to take my wife there to show her where I grew up.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

Reasonable rates are subjective. You could get a rental secured now, but the lower prices would be a lot closer to check in. It's very risky (and not recommended), but the closer to check in, the lower the price will be. September and October are probably a good time to go since it is lower demand.

Take some time to figure out exactly what you want to do. After that, you can post a rental wanted ad in the tug marketplace and people will contact you. I think you should go to Oahu since you lived there and there is so much to do over there. You can research all the islands and activities, though. The timeshare I know of are in Ko Olina and Waikiki. There are vacation homes for rent on the north shore that look outstanding. There's one right on the road between Waimea bay and the trail to the Waimea waterfall. If you decide to rent a house/cottage instead of a timeshare, you'd want to look for that on a different website.

I'm definitely interested in staying on the North Shore of Oahu since I primarily lived there as a kid. I grew up in Waialua and was even born in the sugar plantation hospital there. I have been looking at VRBO and it looks like availability will not be a problem since many rentals are not filled this year. I'm actually more worried about plane tickets than a place to stay.

Looks like you can get a beachfront cottage for under $200./night in Waialua or another part of the north shore and like you said, there is availability for this year, so next year shouldn't be a problem. The good news is September has been the lowest airfare pricing for a number of years. You'll probably be able to choose a place to stay after you get your plane tickets.

There aren't any timeshares convenient to the North Shore of Oahu. They're either in Waikiki or all the way out on the way to Waianae. If you're decided on staying in or around Waialua, you're looking at VRBO or similar.

Sept and Oct are both good months, but October has a little nicer weather. It can be very hot in September. August and September are the hottest months. The public schools have a fall break for one week that happens during September and can cause the airfare to go up that week. So October is the best time, but late September should be fine too.

The north shore has Turtle Bay and is nice, but if you want to see Pearl Harbor, go to a Luau, drive around the scenic coast on the east side, or do any other tourist events, the north shore is not convenient. If all you want to do is lay on the beach, play golf, etc... Turtle Bay is fine. They have condos for rent there, but I think most are for one week or longer. The hotel there cost as much or more than the hotels in Waikiki. I would recommend staying in Waikiki and spending one day driving up to north shore.

The best rentals or safest place to rent a timeshare will be on TUG.

When I rent, it's either via TUG, Redweek or VRBO. And since fraud is rampant everywhere, I now insist on using PayPal to secure the reservation with my credit card.

But I think that VRBO might be your best bet. Most Hawaiian rentals require a 3 night stay, but that should be doable.

As far as Maui goes, you should have no problem finding a timeshare rental between $200-$300/night (mostly for a 1BR). There are a few guys I have rented from over the years in mid-September who have very good pricing ($1600 for a 7th floor oceanfront unit in Marriott's Maui Ocean Club Napili Villa), and I know for a fact that they rent them out yearly (one is up for this September right now, as a matter of fact). This is all through Redweek, which I've found to have the best availability and pricing (sorry, TUG).
