I've mixed feelings about this. I haven't been to a lot of Caribbean islands, only Bahamas and Grand Cayman for a week each, but I think Hawaii could have become a lot like some of the (less prosperous?) Caribbean island nations, if it hadn't become a US territory.

Unfortunately the Hawaiian people did get screwed...I had Hawaiian history as a required course in middle school, and don't remember much except for the Great Mahele land grab in the 1840s. I read last year about the Parker Ranch history and briefly on the 1887 constitution which was forced on the current ruler King Kalakaua. That constitution redefined the rules and effectively took away the voting rights for a good many indigenous Hawaiian people.
