This is neat---not really for any perks (I imagine few timeshares would be involved) but it gets me thinking about how we might do something other than "spend money" that benefits the places to which we travel.

We have been participating in the "take a dog on a field trip" program at the Kauai Humane Society for a few years now. It's wonderful for the dogs and for us, since we miss our dogs when we travel. We make a donation as well, since it's really not volunteer "work." :)

I'd like to do that, but car rental contracts may prohibit transporting dogs or cats in the car. Ever have trouble when returning the car?

No. We always take 4-6 towels from the resort to cover the back seat. The shelter gives you one, but we just use that to clean paws as needed. And we've been known to take the car to the car wash. :)

Great reminder. We drive around the island from Kaanapali to donate to the food bank. I got on their site and there is a way to volunteer so we filled out the forms. Hope there is something in the Kaanapali area. When we were there in November, the line to pick up a box of food (close to the Kaanapali airport) was a few miles long.

We volunteer at the food bank at Chuch of the Pacific, just on the outskirts (east) of Princeville. Distributed About 10000 lb of food on Wednesday. Help always appreciated!

We work at the church north of the airport in Kaanapali. They distribute food every Thursday.
