We have never been to Hawaii, and were thinking of going to Hawaii for our 25th anniversay this fall. How is the weather then? Would it be better to wait and go another time of year?

Any suggestions on resorts?

This Fall, as in 2008, is pretty short notice. The season is three months long, so when exactly would you want to go? The later in the year, the wetter it can get, but it never gets SO wet as to stop a great vacation from happening. You just need to be ready for any kind of weather.

Resorts come in all sizes and locations. Check the TUG reviews and make some choices. then ask more specific questions.

Good luck!

Fall is my favorite time of year in Hawaii. There is less rain, the ocean is warmer for diving and less people traveling. However, you need to avoid any holidays, including schools on year round fall break. Concur with Dave that the rainy season starts in the fall, so if you are looking at November, it could be hit or miss.

Regarding TS to stay in: I have gotten my best deals when other people cancel. A lot of owners in Hilton, Marriott or other TSs will lock in a week one year in advance and just prior to the penalty window (usually 30 days in advance), they will call and cancel. If you have your name on a standby list with RCI, or if you check the net on the Hilton web page every night to see what opened up, you can get a nice place to stay. Which resort and Island depends on where you want to stay and what you like to do. My 2 cents is that Oahu is very busy with lots to do, Maui is more island style with a nice blend of country and things to do, and the big island of Hawaii is more country with lots to do. Kauai is the garden isle and if it is the first visit and only island, I would recommend doing something more exciting.

Our first trip was in September, and I also did a trip in late October. Both were fantastic with great weather and fewer crowds. There was also more room on the planes, which was very nice.

I prefer to go to Hawaii in September or October. The weather is great, and the kids are back in school.

We have been vacationing in Hawaii almost every year since 1976. We have gone to every island during various times of the year but our favorite time is October. For a first timer I would recommend Maui or the Big Island for the most variety and consistantly good weather. There are lots of very comfortable timeshares so which you choose really depends on what's available for exchange and what your preferences are. If you read the reviews here on TUG you can get a good idea of what the various resorts are like.

The downturn in the economy has impacted Hawaiian tourism so you may find you have some great resorts to choose from. Be prepared for high prices on airfare, gas and food, though.

Avg. temps in Hawaii are only about 7 degrees different between winter and summer. September and October weather is nearly the same as summer, but the rainy season starts in Nov. You usually see lower airfare in Sept. and Oct., too. But of course, airfare is high right now. And you need to be prepared for sticker shock - Hawaii is expensive - gas, food, activities. But so worth it!

Are you looking for a last-minute timeshare exchange? What exchange Co.?

I usually recommend Maui for a first trip, but Kauai is our favorite island, and from Indiana, I highly recommend 2 weeks, since the flight is so long.

Here's a thread that might help you make up your mind - Which Island to visit?

What do you like to do on vacation?

Shopping?
Nightlife?
Fine dining?
Outdoor activities?
Organized tours?
Ocean activities?
Hiking?
Luau?
Just relaxing?

I've visited in April, July, and November. The weather for us, respectively, was ideal, almost ideal (too hot a few days) and ideal. It did rain a few days in November, but I don't mind an occasional rain shower.

If you travel in late November/early December, you'll have a chance of seeing the whales in Maui. That's worth the price of admission right there. But fall is a great time to travel to Hawaii as everything from condo rates to rental car rates are low.

I have only been to Hawaii 2x. September and October. Next year we will be going in October again. I love October, its a little cooler but still drier and of course the kids are back in school.

We went our first and only time in Maui mid-May and were very pleased. I have a week booked for mid-November and for whatever reason it didn't dawn on me that the weather might be different.

Hopefully it won't been too different.

Loaded question...Hawaii? Meaning the "Big Island"? And if so, which side (makes a difference)? The weather isn't THAT different on any of the islands in my experience...And I'd take any Hawaii weather any day over any weather any where else...Hawaii is awesome! Go and enjoy it!

The fall is a bad time to go to Hawaii.:D
The water is still warm
The trades tend to die down some
There are less people and a bunch less kids
Lines are shorter
Cars cost less
There still isn't a lot of rain
Airfare cost less
Easier to trade

Guess that is why it our favorite time...

For real ....
There are two bad things about the fall.
The whales are not there yet
and the waves tend to turn Honoloa Bay into a surf spot instead of a dive spot.

Airfare for our PHX-HNL flights at the end of October dropped to $479 today. I would say now is the time to look for flights if you are going this fall. We paid $709 for these flights in May. Even with the $150 per ticket fee we still get $80 in travel vouchers each with that huge drop.
