While on Kauai the last two weeks there was an article welcoming the Koreans to Hawaii. Koreans spend $241/day (approx) and mainlanders spend $197/day (approx)

How does the Hawaiian Government know, down to the dollar, how much we all spend on the Islands? They don't do a cash inventory when we arrive and when we depart. I don't think Master Card and VISA report my spending to the Hawaiian Government.

Just curious.

Do they make assumptions based on those cards we have to fill out? I know we have to fill in they type of accommodations, number of nights, etc. If I remember correctly (and these days, I can't be sure of that!), one question ask you to fill out how much you anticipate spending. I have no idea where the data come from, but perhaps this is one source.
