Pretty happy we never purchased in Hawaii at this point. We had been traveling to Hawaii every other year. Next year was the year we should have returned. We’ve already made plans to visit Crystal Shores instead. I believe thE effects if Hawaii’s quarantine will extend much further than when they finally end the quarantine.

Keeping travelers in suspense is not a good plan in my opinion. We planned 4 weeks next year. Starting to rethink those plans.

There are people on the islands who are thrilled with the lack of tourism, but there are companies that are really suffering in the meantime.

I hope Maui opens by next February. The governor is loving his power right now. Someone needs to talk some sense into that guy, but there is a general disdain for timeshare visitors specifically on the islands. If you have ever gotten the stinkeye, you know what I am talking about.

We all have to consider that Hawaii does not have the same density of health care services as on the mainland. If there is an epidemic on any of the islands, it would be disastrous for them.

Timeshare versus hotel visitors is a difference?

Yes, well timeshare owners generally do not eat out as often or use the touring companies as often because we go all of the time and bought timeshare for economy. They would love to book all of the high-end hotels solid and build more of those without kitchens.

AND Maui charges 7X more for property taxes to timeshares of the same value as private homes. They don't want us there as timeshare owners. We own 3 annual weeks on Maui, and we sure don't like paying $300 per week for property taxes.

I heard that Hawaii is welcoming the Japanese with open arms.

Hawaii will be open long before February. July 31 is when the extra $600/wk unemployment payment ends, my guess is they'll be forced to open by early August at the latest. With the extra $600/wk, a lot of the low paid workers in the hospitality, restaurant and retail industries are making more on unemployment than they made by working. A minimum wage worker would earn about $400/wk in wages working. That same worker is now getting $231/wk in unemployment plus $600/wk extra from the Care's ACT. So, his weekly take home pay has doubled. Would many of us be marching on the governors mansion if our pay doubled and we didn't have to go to work? That's why Governor Ige has a lot of support. But, all that ends on 7/31.

Exactly. I’d certainly be disappointed if I had Hawai’i travel plans, but Coronavirus is still a serious situation and I’d rather be safe (and keep others safe). Too many people are acting like it’s over, but we’re still in the middle of the pandemic. If I were a hospitality worker there, I’d be thankful I don’t have to be exposed to one potential carrier after another all day long.

We cancelled our Maui May trip and maybe we’ll try to book later this year if we feel safe about traveling, but most likely we’ll just end up eating the cost and letting those restricted options expire. :-/

Eye Roll. Not worth my time. Maybe enjoy Vegas or a cruise, Disney?

We know what you are talking about. We have plans to go to Maui in February as well. Big concern is whether some of the great little restaurants that are our favorites will have survived without tourists. Some of those restaurants are very close quarters - reducing capacity will cripple them.

Totally agree that Hawaii’s reaction to Covid-19 will result in permanent changes to tourist behavior. I’m at a stage in life where I’ve been to Hawaii, two weeks at a time, twice yearly, visiting every island for decades. It’s been a wonderful run, but seeing the persistence of the Governor to instill such barbaric controls against the very lifeblood of their economy, I’m done; so many other beautiful places to visit.

@BagsArePacked - so let's consider the following: you want to call out someone with over 22K of messages here on TUG over the previous decade and a half, who lives in one of the most beautiful places in this country as being negative for making comments on how Hawaii has handled their COVID-19 situation?

Hawaii has made a complete mess of how they have handled their response to COVID-19 and I say that as someone who has never been there before. Yes, I would love to vacation in Hawaii and enjoy the beauty that so many have raved about not just on TUG but many other places too but when someone has taken the time and effort to contribute the amount of content RickandCindy23 has, perhaps in your next 50 posts you can offer something of substance in rebuttal. To be fair, no one asked for this COVID-19 crisis, but Hawaii Governor Ige has redefined what it means to be an ugly American with his heavy handed approach and response to this crisis.

My response was directed towards her repeated slurs against the people that live there. Now edited. Yes, she does post a lot.

I called the Gazebo house restaurant. They are starting to open soon but will see how it goes. If no business they’ll close up. We will go there for a breakfast once out of quarantine, IF they are still open.

Not sure what you would have done differently, but it appears that Hawaiians support the steps their government has taken.

Those polls you quote are quite dated considering how fast the COVID-19 situation changes.. They were conducted May 18-20. I'd like to see the same questions posed in today's environment, almost a month later.

The polls were completed about 3 weeks ago. 24 days to be exact. I doubt there's been a major shift in public sentiment when in reality, not much has changed for most of the population.

Once the extra $600 a week in the unemployment runs out then I think people's attitudes will change as far as letting tourists back in.

Couldn't agree more. The reality is that those low paid workers that have served us well over the years, are making more in unemployment than they were when working. The minimum wage workers are making more than twice their regular salary. Personally, I'm happy for them. You'd have to have blinders on to not see the poverty on those islands. They've cleaned our rooms, served our meals and catered to our every need. They deserve a break. My vacation can wait.

So does the Governor of Hawaii want and needs tourists to visit the Islands?

What I believe could have changed is the reality that this unemployment situation with the increased Federal dollars is not a vacation and will soon be coming to an end and the statements from the Governor have not indicated this is on his mind.

I appreciate both their points of view, and their message count means very little when it comes to certain opinions not related to Vistana/Timeshares/etc..

As someone who lives in a vacation area, I believe that Governor Ige has handled this crisis extremely well. We would love to feel safe in our area, but we have no idea what visitors are bringing into our area. Hawaii is lucky in their ability to control their environment. Perhaps if you'd ever been to Hawaii, you'd understand the importance of protecting it.

Some towns in Hawaii have a 35% unemployment. I guess the view of how well Hawaii has handled the situation depends a lot on the personal situation. A family with kids in school and with both parents on the last weeks of EI may disagree with you. Bottom line to me is that those at risk should be extremely cautions. Those who are not at risk have a right to have a dignifying life, a job, an education and live outside a prison cell (their own home).
