Have you had home repair issues during stay-at-home?

Panina and Passepartout have mentioned health issues that have come up when everyone is supposed to stay in. What about home repairs? So far we have had a 17 year old microwave/vent hood combo that has heated its last leftovers as of yesterday, although it still seems to suck up fumes from the cook top, and a cell phone that is only 18 months old has stopped working. Phone is probably considered essential, but our favorite T-Mobile store is closed so we'll wait. I dragged the small freestanding microwave in from our casita, so that will tide us over until Pacific Sales opens back up. There goes the stimulus check, if it ever gets here!

Yes, we had to have our landlord get us a plumber because our bathtub was backing up really bad. Surprisingly she had someone out the next day. That was over a week ago. They even replaced our garbage disposal too.

Neighbors two doors down from me had a tree cutting service at their place today, removing a huge dead tree from their yard. I guess "essential" also includes not having a dead tree fall on your house.

We had bad smells coming up the bathtub drain so we had to have the septic tank pumped today. Car had to have the shocks all replaced. I wanted to buy tile for the kitchen with the stimulus but that will have to wait

Note me, but my bff in Florida had plumbing issues. I was on the phone with her last week. She was waiting for the plumber to come. He told her they were working with less people, but she was "top of the list". She wasn't sure when she'd see him.

I fear we will need a "bird eviction guy" which is really a "roof guy". Somewhere up where we can't see on our tile roof I suspect there is a cavity. I'm watching for nest material being carried up to the roof, but so far just seeing a lot of flyovers.

Good luck! Our guy moved into the attic right after the tornado (hence the new roof) so I figure the squirrel nest in the tree was dislodged. Turned out it was a mama squirrel because she made a nest and had a baby in there. We set up the Blink cameras and caught a glimpse of the baby just once. In the meantime the mama Squirrel would have a party up there, leaping about. I will say it was a very polite squirrel. She arrived faithfully right before night to lay down and sleep and then I would hear her leave in the morning and see her playing in the backyard digging up nuts during the day. We tried in vain to dissuade the squirrel from living in our attic but finally gave up and called the squirrel evection guy.

In the end the squirrel outsmarted us all. She moved out the day before he came; he closed up the hole after making sure the juvenile was out and we can see now that the squirrels have moved to the yard behind ours. They still come and dig up nuts in our yard though.

Our pool servicing company is still working as well as the exterminator who comes monthly to spray for bugs around the outside of the house. Gardeners are at work all over our neighborhood. I saw a few home improvement projects going on as we went for a walk today including what looked like a new bathroom installation and a casita under construction. Just from our observation it looks like business as usual in those occupations.

Our HOA includes front yard service in our annual bill. Our community guys were out edging, trimming and moving lawns yesterday. I suppose if they stay 6 ft apart it is all OK. which is how they work. But I find they are ride together in one car to the job sites, so there goes the 6 ft spacing. But the don't have to interact with anyone in the community so that is a plus I suppose.

About 12 years ago we had our basement waterproofed. Along with that we carry an insurance policy on that waterproofing so if we ever develop a leak they will come out and fix it. Well, we've had a rather wet spring and there's a leak. I called them about it and was told they will come out and fix it when the SIP is over since it wasn't flooding the entire basement.

In the 5 years we have owned this house, we have only had to do one maintenance project and that was after the heavy rains in early 2019. It was raining so hard that there was a small hole in the flashing and we got a leak in one room. So we called a roofer and they fixed it. We had to replace the carpet in that room and get the walls fixed where they were damaged by the water. That is all we have needed to do in 5 years. I feel very lucky that this house is so sturdy and well built.

Got home March17 after 17 beautiful days in Cancun.. Heat in house wasn't woking on March 23.. Started to panic a little; so I called local company..They arrived, to my surprise half hour later. Condensation hose was clogged...Problem solved and I didn't have to pay cuz same company was at my house b4 we left for Cancun. It was covered.. 30 day warranty...Yippee

The front 2 eyes of our stove died before shelter in place. I purchased a new one but delivery was after shelter in place so I canceled the order. The back 2 eyes work but they are smaller. I still use the store but we also purchased a hot plate. It works well.

Our dryer died a few days ago. It still blows air but no heat. I ordered a clothesline. Although I have noticed there has been a lot less dirty laundry since SIP.

All of our windows were replaced last week. Exchanged cheap, single-pane developer-installed ones for nice dual-pane vinyl ones. We had signed the contract about two weeks before the shutdown, and elected to proceed anyway when SIP/SAH started.

Our gardener still comes every week, although recently he had to skip three weeks because of all the rain we've had. Right before the shutdown, we told our housecleaner, who came bi-weekly and took public transport, to stay away, both for her sake and ours. We just send her a check every two weeks.

We’re going to our shore place this weekend so we arranged that our housekeeper can come to our home here to clean.

We’ve had several home repairs/ maintenance things done during SIP:
- garage door repair. Put new rubber strip on bottom channel of door to keep the little critters out
- roof leaked during a bad rainstorm and had the roofer come and fix the flashing and shingles in that spot
- window washer did the exterior window cleaning

Good part is they aren’t so busy and come pretty quickly and are appreciative of the work!

A waterproofing company came out to look at an area of concern and give a quote. They will schedule a time for the work if I choose them, but are probably too expensive. I'm getting more quotes.
I had an electrician out a couple weeks ago, for non-emergency work. He came in an unmarked truck in case the snitch patrol was out. He didn't know if he was essential, but we could have convinced anyone planning to arrest him or me.

check your dryer circuit breaker, it has two, one for heat one for air. It's a common problem easily fixed

We had a termite inspection yesterday and it's our turn for the tent. I am not surprised as our house is almost 33 years old and most of the houses in our neighborhood have had termites at one time or another so it is just our turn, but I am not excited about the bill or the prep. We had it inspected last year and got a clean bill of health but the inspector yesterday thinks that last year's inspector missed these termites as they came in under the eaves near our upstairs master bath. We are both working full time at home so we have the money but I would have preferred using it on travel.
