Has anyone canceled or changed a reservation with United?

We don't fly all that often, so I need some help! We have two round-trips from Newark to Richmond, VA, set for early April. United says we can change them with no change fee.

When I look at the United site, it looks like I can cancel them and get a travel voucher for the cost of the tickets. It looks like the voucher will be good for...a year? Is this correct?

Is there any way to cancel and get a refund?

Thanks!

If you purchased non refundable tickets, other than calling and begging, you can't get a refund. The voucher would be good for a year from the date the original ticket was purchased.

Dd had a workshop in Toronto scheduled for May. The workshop ended up being cancelled. She was able to get a full refund on the upgrades she purchase from United. She must have done that through the website since United (as are other airlines) are saying don't call with questions unless you have a flight within the next 72 hours. She want to find out if she can get a full refund, not just a credit for the flight. Her company was going to pay for the workshop and flights, etc., but the charges went on dd's credit card. She isn't sure how the whole thing will work out.
