Joseph Hansom designed the first Hansom Cabs in 1834 to take people around the busy London streets. Hansom, an architect who designed Birmingham Town Hall, Mount St. Mary's College near Sheffield and some 200 other buildings, was born on this date in 1803. Many people fondly remember a ride around Central Park in NYC in a Hansom Cab.

Approximately 64 years after Hansom Cabs were used as a mode of transportation, this ad appeared in Chicago. "Costs less to use than a horse. Doesn't get sick. Doesn't eat when it doesn't work." - Advertisement for the US Electric Carriage Company of New Chicago, circa 1898.
