I spoke with an elder from Wai'oli Hui'ia church 5-10 years ago and she said at one time there was a cable car that would take you down the bluff, where Princeville is located, to the swimming beach.

You can see what it looked like by Googling Hanalei Plantation Hotel.

Unfortunately, she is in a nursing home now and doesn't even recognize me:bawl: .

We'll be on Kauai then also. Just starting to get our plans together. This

This thread reminded me of the old Coco Palms on Kauai.
Blue Hawaii was filmed there. Also the location of the TV series Fantasy Island.
I last stayed there in 1973. (Gosh! almost 40 years ago).

Anyway, the "Elvis Canoe" is still floating on the lagoon.

I would love to see this property reopened.

Here is an article on this grand old place, with pics of the ruins.

Pics and articles of Coco Palms from days gone by

I'd love to see it restored too but don't hold your breath.

Drove by it in December 2011 and it is just a ruin:bawl: :bawl: Termites are having a feast. I believe it is beyond salvage. Every year it looks worse and worse. It is an eye sore and should be leveled.

What a shame.

An investor group has plans and a permit to build condos and a resort on the site. But, locals are fighting it. They want the site to be designated a historical landmark and turned into a public park.

Given the economy, building in the near term is not in the cards anyway.

So, it just sits there.
