We are in the process of working a PIC into the Wyndham system, so I returned a call (voicemail) from an Orlando number that was calling “about my timeshare”.
Turns out it’s a guy offering me $4 per point, but wanting at least 400,000 points. He said cash up front for us.
We have no interest in renting out our unused points at this time.
My question is, what type of scam is this? Should I have not even acknowledged that I owned TS points?
Hopefully I didn’t get myself into some kind of future problem with my RCI account.
I tried to search TUG for “Better Business Lodging” but no results.
Thx
Jeff

Timeshare owners need to be aware of this type of "company" as they pop up all the time. This is an advertising listing company. Usually starts with a cold call in which they will lie by stating that they have buyers and renters lined up for your timeshare. They may give you “advice” that your timeshare is worth thousands of dollars (so the fee they are going to ask for seems reasonable).

They are pushing for an upfront fee for “marketing” your timeshare. Once they have the fee they will put the timeshare listing on their website with hundreds or even thousands of other over priced timeshares where they will sit with no activity. Since they have your fee already they have no incentive to do anything more. They could care less if it sells or rents.

These listing companies skirt the law. They provide a service, a poor one, but a service nonetheless. Where they can get in trouble is by lying on the phone that they can sell or rent your timeshare. Their disclaimer is in their terms and conditions in which they explicitly state they do not sell or rent timeshares themselves. From their website - "Better Business Lodging, LLC (BBL) is an independent for sale/ for rent by owner marketing and advertising company." and "DISCLOSURE required by Fla.Stats. §721.20(9): BBL does not provide or engage in real estate broker services. Because BBL is an advertising company and does not provide real estate services, BBL has itself sold zero (0) timeshare Properties. Additionally, Better Business Lodging, LLC clients may have offline sales generated by offers directly to the owner, BBL is unaware of the exact percentage of offers to sales. BBL has no knowledge regarding the average success rate of listings to sales because BBL is not involved in any negotiations relative to the sale, rental, closing or procurement of buyers of timeshare interests. "

They lied to you by making you believe that they wanted to pay you for your points. What you would have received is a contract to list your timeshare for sale or rent, all for a huge fee. They don't care how user friendly their website is for potential buyers or even if your timeshare ever sells or rents. They got their fee and that is all they want.

Although this is a "legit" company (website created in 2015), their cold calling, blatant lies and zero value for the fee makes them a scam in my book.

Thx all. I suspected as much. Just acknowledging to the caller that I owned a TS had me worried. Number is blocked, but I’m sure they have more numbers to call from, they all do.
The cash up front for my points was a new twist though. Didn’t want money from me (maybe they just didn’t get to that part) they just wanted points?

Their promise of cash to you was going to eventually be followed by a request for their fee. They will deny later that they told you they were going to pay you as their contract only states it is a listing fee.

i just noticed in your first post that they said they were going to pay you $4 per point X 400,000 points? That’s $1.6M. Did you mean 4 cents?

I’m pretty sure he said $4. I still can pull up the phone number, if anyone wants to check them out, and has 400,000 points they won’t be using.
