I just found an exchange into this resort for April/2007. I have it on hold for 24 hours. I've looked at the resort's rating and have read some of the reviews already, but I wanted to ask a few questions.

How far is this resort from the main tourist area of Cabo? It looks like it's a little bit aways.
Does anyone know if they shuttle?
How are the one bedrooms that accomadate (4/6)? I tried finding a floor plan, but came up short.
Should I maybe hold out for a different resort in Cabo? I'm searching with a 1 bedroom Orlando eek #18 at the Vacation Village at Parkway.

Thanks for all and any help.

This is a link for a map of the corridor of Los Cabos. Taxis in Cabo are very pricey, the taxi union is extremely powerful. At least double what they are in Puerto Vallarta. I would imagine from the Sheraton Hacienda Del Mar the taxi rate would be around $ 20 each way. If being close to town is important to you I would imagine that a room at the Villa del Palmar, Playa Grande, Solmar, Finnestera or one of the Pueblo Bonitos would come available since you are a year out. Even the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach which is out of town has a shuttle to its other resorts, so that is how a friend of mine that stayed there over Christmas got to town. Look at the link I posted for the corridor map, there are also other maps of Cabo and lots of good info on that website.

I dont know much else about the Hacienda del Mar except a friend stayed there and said it was nice but a ways from town. However, it is fairly close to one of our favorite restaurants Villa Serena.

It's a beautiful resort, and they do have a shuttle--how convenient the shuttle is, I couldn't say. It doesn't cost much ($135.00 a week or there abouts) to rent a small car for the week. Then transportation into town becomes a non-issue and you can enjoy the beauty of the Sheraton's setting.

We returned from Hacienda Del Mar two weeks ago. It's a great place to stay- a little reserved and not much partying- but the service is wonderful and the restaurants are great. They are pricey but good. We rented a car for the week, but we listened to a presentation at Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach and they paid for the car and gave us $200 (two couples) in food certificates. This is our second visit to HDM. I'm willing to answer questions if you'd like.

Just returned from Hacienda del Mar

We just spent President's Week in a one-bedroom at Hacienda del Mar, and I was very impressed. I, too was a little worried because of some of the unhappy TUG reviews -- but the resort is really top-notch, and their beach/pool area (where you will spend most of your time, anyways) -- is one of the best in Cabo.

We go to Cabo every February and we have also stayed at Westin Regina (out on the corridor), Playa Grande (near town), and Pueblo Bonito Blanco (where we own). We have also toured many of the Cabo timeshares. We always rent a car, as driving in Cabo is easy, and if you take a timeshare tour, you'll get a week of car rental free, plus other goodies, to boot.

As for the units at Hacienda del Mar, we exchanged into the 1 bedroom 4/6. There are 2 queen beds in the bedroom, and I have to tell you --- those are about the best-quality, most comfortable beds we have ever slept in, in Mexico. Kind of like the Westin "Heavenly Beds" ... I think they are the Sheraton "Sweet Slumber" beds, or something similar. The bedding is very high quality, and the sheets felt like egyptian cotton or very high thread-count. (Both 1-bedrooms at Playa Grande and the Westin were like sleeping on concrete slabs, even AFTER you ask them to put on the egg-carton foam.) I don't like coming back from vacation with back problems, so I see the higher quality beds at the Sheraton as a BIG plus. (But I think they might have been there for only the last year or two.)

Most 1-bedrooms in Cabo have 2 baths, but the Hacienda del Mar does not. When you enter the bathroom from the main hallway there is a large sink area, a glass-enclosed shower, and a toilet behind a lockable door of it's own. There is also an entrance to this same bathroom from the master bedroom, which has a sink/vanity of it's own and a nice deep jacuzzi bathtub. It would have been nice to have more than 1 toilet, but it was not a show-stopper, since we had only our 11-year old with us. She slept out on the convertible sofa in the living room, which was fine for your kids --- but did not look appealing if you were travelling with another couple. It would definately be a case of the have's, and the have-nots. The bedroom feels like a luxurious master bedroom, whereas the living area pullout sofa has the appearance of sleeping-over in someone's living room. It's cramped when the bed is out, and you get to hear the refrigerator breathing like Darth Vadar thoughout the night. But the 1-bedroom units we stayed in at Playa Grande and Westin Regina were the same way --- really just fit for kids in the living room. The Mexican Pullouts that are so hard, you need 2 layers of egg-carton topping to make them sleepable.

As for the pool and beach areas, I now think that Sheraton has one of the best in Cabo. Lots of pools cascading into each other, but all the big resorts have that. What I really liked was the number of umbrellas and palm trees they had. We burn easily, and at most resorts it's not easy to nab an umbrella, or any kind of shade. But Hacienda del Mar had lots of heavy-duty canvas umbrellas at every pool area, lots of palapas on the beach, AND lots of white portable umbrellas they would set up for people on the beach, as well. They had lots of activities for people who wanted activities (pool volleyball, basketball, water aerobics, salsa dancing, bartending classes, bingo, etc. In the middle section of pools there were shallow pools and walk-in pools for the kiddies, where lots of people with toddlers & young kids hung out. Then, the farthest pools were quiet (with colder water -- which kept all the kids away) and ended up being more of an adult-only area.

The Sheraton beach area is really gorgeous, but very different from Medano Beach. Medano Beach is more compact, and more action-packed. But the Sheraton beach is very wide, much more spread out, especially with all the nice palapas. I found it very scenic. Especially, as far as just sitting in the lounge chair, reading a good book, sipping a favorite beverage, relaxing the day away. I would even put the Sheraton beach/pool area ahead of ALL the Pueblo Bonitos - including Sunset Beach, Westin Regina (not enough shade for us/narrow strip of beach), and our former-favorite Playa Grande (can't see the beach well from the pools). But everyone's entitled to their own opinion.
Every resort has it's pluses and minuses. If you want the BEST ocean view from your unit -- choose the Westin Regina -- every unit will have drop-dead gorgeous oceanfront ocean views (but it's WAY out on the corridor). If you want to be able to walk to town, have a gorgeous interior, nice pools, and possibly great ocean views -- Playa Grande would be a good fit. If you want action, action, action-- then you want one of Medano Beach resorts (PB Blanco, PBRose). If you want luxury and pampering, and want to "get away from it all"... PB Sunset Beach would be a good fit.

As for the comment that the Hacienda del Mar is out "on the corridor". After staying at the Westin Regina which is way, way, way out on the corridor --- the Cabo del Sol area seemed fairly close to town. We could drive to Costco in 5 minutes, and the Pueblo Bonito Rose (for "Italian Night" on Fridays -- wow!) in less than 10 minutes. I think the Regina is more like 20 minutes away from Cabo-- a much, much longer drive than Hacienda del Mar.

Rene has said it all so thanks to her for taking the time to post so thoroughly. While we were at Hacienda del Mar, we were only able to stay five days. We had a two bedroom in one of the interior buildings (usually RCI traders do not get ocean view.) The two bedroom was very spacious but the one we had was a lower level garden view. It had no pizazz. When we inquired as to other possibilities, they gave us a one bedroom master ocean front for the five days instead and it was great. We had to agree that we would be out on Saturday as it was reserved the next week. It was a two story unit with a bath upstairs and down. It is true that the sleep sofa is for the poor visiting cousin but the master bedroom was truly fabulous and the master bed was as great as Rene indicates. We also had two patios, one on the first floor which walked right out to the grassy area next to the pools. It certainly was the best way to experience the resort. Service was great and people were nice.
The next year, however, we stayed at Pueblo Bonito Sunset and were smitten with the amenities and service there and now we like that resort better.
We also rented a car and shopped at the local supermarket and were able to take sidetrips as well. Car was not exactly free with timeshare tours because we opted for the expensive liability insurance but it was still a great deal.
Last tip, if you ever endured high school Spanish, drag out those old textbooks and brush up. It will help immensely as you will be seen as a caring visitor rather than a nameless tourist when you use your Spanish. And, it comes back so start practicing!

Funtime,
"Smitten" is the perfect description for the way you feel about a resort after a great vacation there. I seem to fall in love over and over again in Cabo. I loved the views of the Westin Regina SO MUCH, that I was using their free internet service looking for a resale week while I was there. And when we came back from Playa Grande, I immediately booked a week there for the following year -- smitten again! But year #2 at Playa Grande had lousy weather, grey skies -- gray beach --- the resort did not seem as fabulous as the previous year. And this year, I was so worried about this Hacienda del Mar exchange -- that when we received a lovely room, and saw the fabulous the beachfront was --- what can I say, but smitten, again!

I think it's funny because there are so many great resorts in Cabo, and they are all different. It is also interesting how many people we met at the pool who own multiple resorts, which is probably not a bad idea, if you can afford it. Lots of folks seem to own 1 week on action-packed Medano Beach, and then spend a 2nd week somewhere else. We even met several (retired) couples who were there for 4 weeks, and one couple who were in Cabo for 5 weeks. (But they thought the 5th week was 1 too many.) We also met several retirees who had DRIVEN to Cabo from Arizona or California. I guess that would be a lot cheaper than renting a car for 5 weeks!

I'll have to upload my pictures to one of the photo web sites, so people can see Hacienda del Mar, for themselves. But I thought it was really gorgeous!

It's funny what different people go to Cabo for. I wasn't all that impressed with downtown Cabo, too Americanized for me. I much prefered San Jose del Cabo for it's more laid back Mexican feel. There was good shopping on the main drag and plenty of great restaurants to choose from.

We are owners at Club Regina Los Cabos and love it because of the fabulous views, beautiful pools, and spacious rooms. True it is off the beaten path, but peace and quiet is why we go to Cabo. I spend my time being a lounge slug listening to the ocean and reading as many books as possible in a week. Driving is no big deal in Cabo. We drove into San Jose almost every night for dinner. Has anybody been to Zippers Bar and Grill in San Jose? What a kick! We also loved Damiana for their great local cuisine.

Here's are some photos of our trip last May. Los Cabos

Wow!! Thanks for all the feedback. It sounds like this is a really nice resort to stay at. A few posters stated that this is a Sheridan property, and I just wanted to make sure we were talking about the same resort b/c RCI doesn't say that. This is resort #3622. Is this the one we are all talking about? I HOPE SO!!! I haven't stayed at a lot of resorts, and I'm still learning about trades and timesharing.

Anyone know how to contact a resort for a tour & free car rental?

Thanks,
Sarah

3 Bedroom

Has anyone stayed in 3 bedroom at HDM? If you have choice between 2bd at Playa Grande vs. 3bd Hacienda Del Mar, which is better in terms of unit(not the distance to town or the beach)? I have 3 small kids and we will stay in a resort/in a unit most of time.

When you walk out of the baggage claim area at the airport, you will be "accosted" by several young men who all want to sign you up for a tour to some resort. When you walk downtown, you will find young men at booths trying to arrange timeshare presentations. When you check into your resort someone there will most likely try to set you for a presentation.

You'll have no trouble getting a tour if you want one, but be sure to remember all the TUG advice you've read about NOT buying from the developer. :)

I will definitely never buy from a developer again!! I learned my lesson the first time.

I believe it will be very easy to find a t/s presentation tour, but how do I find those that offer the free rental? Do you know if this is something I can try and set up ahead of time?

Thanks,
Sarah

Last time I went Cabo, I reserved a car from Avis via internet in US. Then when I went to Avis rental in Cabo, they offered me $200 off of my car rental if I do PB Sunset timeshare tour.

Me too; I think the Sunset guy is permanently stationed at Avis. We also found a buy on the street in San Jose and told him we'd take the Sheridan tour for $200.00 U.S. dollars. He complied. When we got back, we told him we'd take others for $200.00 U.S. dollars. We did a bunch because we don't really "do" anything with our mornings and decided we'd take the cash. It worked well for us.

Wow, it's that easy huh? I just hope it's the same when I get there. I think I'll check Avis' rates, and hopefully it'll be the same!

Thanks!

yes be sure to book the rental in advance and Avis has consistently had the best rate on a compact which we got for $115 for the week, plus tax. Research using your gold m/c or visa to use for insurance to save that cost also.

You can usually get $200 from Avis plus some meal certs if you work hard enough.

Enjoy the trip, Cabo is great and there are many great resorts and many great restaurants, try the small off marina blvd places.

Download Google Earth and you can see a satellite photo of all Cabo and your resort in particular...you can pan out and then zoom in. Not the same as Google map. Very helpful orientation.
