Guide or no guide Chichen itza

We made it to Maya land. Tonight is the light show. Tomorow at 8am we do the park . I can barely make out what the guide for tomorrow is saying and wonder if a guide is necessary. The private guide wants $50.00.

Bought the book for $15.00 instead. It has maps and is a prety complete book on Chichen Itza. We did listen in on some of the guided tours. These guide were interesting as well.

I've always thought the guides were very informative and helpful. However if you can split the cost between a number of people $50 sounds a little high. There are guides when you get to the park you might want to see if you can negotiate a little.

When we went the ruins we were not with a group. The guides wanted fifty or sixty dollars and the two of us thought that was way to much and we were going to do it on our own. I heard several other couples discussing this same situation and opened my mouth and began asking if any other small groups wanted to go in with us on a guide. We had about twelve people in a matter of minutes, stopped the search, everybody threw in five bucks and away we went. The guide was very informative and well worth the money. Learned tons from the guide who was very entertaining and spoke English well.

Somewhat off topic, but this describes pretty much what we did at Pompeii. Ended up with a group of about a dozen with a professor of history who grew up nearby as a guide. He led us through back streets to things not in the guidebooks and really made the dead city come to life. All for a small fraction of the cost of a private guide.

The concierge can usually arrange a nice group guided tour for a reasonable price. Get on that includes a swim in a cenote. I have posted pictures from sucn a tour earlier.

Don't wait until the last minute to get a guide like we did. Our chocies at the last minute was not good.
