I apologize in advance for this question, but I couldn't find the answer via a search. (Feel free to refer me to a link with the answer.) So, here's my question...I am not able to go to our week at Grande Ocean so my brother and his family are going. Do I need to purchase a guest certificate for him in order to check in since I won't be with him? Thanks.

II requires you to get a guest certificate if you won't be there.

In the past I would sometimes call and tell the Marriott property that family/friends would be checking in ahead of me. They would make a note that someone else was authorized to checkin.

However some Marriott resorts will no longer allow this practice. I experienced this at Newport Coast Villas in Feb. I called to tell them my BIL would be checking in. They said II now requires guest certificates in that situation and I'd have to get a guest certificate. The Marriott individual (working at NCV) said she didn't like it, but they will get in trouble with II if they allow someone else to checkin without the guest certificate.

So to answer your question......
Yes your brother will need the II guest certificate.

You could call the property directly and ask them if they will allow him to checkin without you. If they'll add his name you might be okay. But it's probably worth the $49 just to know there won't be any problems when he arrives.

LAX mom: Thanks for the reply.

My reservation is directly through Marriott, not thru II. Do you know if the same 'rules' apply if the ressie is not via II?

If it's a Marriott reservation, you should be able to add your brother's name for no expense. Call and tell them he'll be using your week. Shouldn't be a problem.

Lucky brother & his family! Hope they have a great time.
