Guest certificate needed for renter?

I called Marriott Canyon Villa’s to confirm that Marriott added my renters name to a reservation. Front desk guy said he would add it because we will be staying on property at the same time, but he said normally we would need a guest certificate?

I asked him if this was something new and he said no, it’s always been this way. I have been renting this property out for at least 8 years and never heard about a guest certificate needed.

Does anyone know if this is true?

Actually, you only need a guest certificate if it is an Interval International exchange. If it is your own unit (points or weeks) then call the Marriott 800 phone number and ask them to add the name to your own reservation. Far easier than calling the resort directly in my opinion.

That’s my understanding too. Technically you cannot rent out II exchanged weeks, I believe unless they are “given” to your guest via the guest certificate , correct?

Yes, you can “gift” Interval exchanges to family or friends, with a Guest Certificate.
However, their Ts & Cs expressly forbid their use for commercial gain.
”The Host Accommodations may be used only for personal and noncommercial purposes. Members are expressly prohibited from exchanging or renting the Host Accommodations, including, but not limited to, offering the Host Accommodations for sale or rent to third parties through the use of a Guest Certificate or otherwise”

It's actually more restrictive than that. Under II rules you can't even recoup your direct costs for the exchange like exchange fee and the guest certificate fee. RCI is a little more lenient in this area.

If you don't openly advertise and find a renter II has no way to know if you're charging to rent the unit and in my opinion they don't care because they still make their exchange money.

From what I've seen they do care and they sometimes follow up, others time not so it's hit or miss. If they see a pattern they will lock your account, I've seen several examples of that over the years. As for as them not knowing, one would know they're being dishonest.

There have been examples where not only have Interval locked Owners accounts, but also the exchange reservations have been cancelled leaving the person renting without accommodation.
I am sure that these would have resulted in “interesting” follow ups between the Owners and those renting from them!

I'm sure. Historically II has been far more aggressive than RCI in this area but IMO it really doesn't matter. If we know it's against the rules, we should follow them unless II waives their rules. The wink and it's a "gift" just reflects on the person's integrity even if it is successful in skirting the rules.
