I had to release an ongoing search to put something I found on hold. When I went to put the search back on, they asked for an upfront exchange fee.

I clicked 'Live Help' and the agent confirmed they're back to charging at setup time. I asked what sort of publicity has been given to the change; that she couldn't answer.

Most of the independent exchange companies do NOT require this upfront fee.

to answer the question.......

I was not aware - must have changed today - I set one up yesterday and did not have to do a fee.

I don't see the big issue with this. You have to pay the exchange fee, so what's the big deal if you pay it now or later?

Also, if the exchange fee goes up between the time you started the search and when it was filled, wouldn't you be "locked in" to the older exchange fee? Seems like a possible benefit if that is so.

SFX

cancel RCI and go to another company. I use SFX as my new exchange company.

Are you happy with them. We have given them a couple of weeks at the Donatello in S.F. and so far have had no luck in two years of trying to go to the Oregon Coast and/or Hawaii (to a decent exchange). We have still gone to Hawaii but with another exchange. We used to be able to exchange the Donatello for a 3 bedroom in Hawaii and since points with RCI the Donatello doesn't get much and with SFX it hasn't gotten anything.

Sounds like my experience with SFX - they were way too much effort to get an exchange. RCI is certainly not perfect, but it's the devil I know and the one I will stay with - until they no longer meet my needs.

I also haven't had any luck with SFX. I deposited a week with them thinking I could get Manhattan Club for the dates I needed but no bites yet.

RCI despite its faults has given me many, many good exchanges.

I have had the same luck. I have had a banked week with a VERY high maintenance fee expire and could never find a thing I could use. I was able to get one exchange, but gave a one bedroom sleeps four during the summer in Englad for a hotel room at the Donatello...far from a fair trade, but it was a time I could go and at least use the week.

I am hesitant to give SFX anything more until there exchange system becomes more transparant, or I want to go to Mexico!

SFX has little to zero inventory in many of the areas I like to travel like the Florida Panhandle, the Smoky Mountains, and the Blue Ridge mountains. There are 1000's of resorts that RCI will accept weeks for deposit that SFX will not take. SFX is mainly good for Hawaii exchanges if you own a week at the limited number of resorts they accept for deposit. As most of the prior posts said, SFX will not work for most TUGGERS and does not work for me.

People either really LOVE SFX or they are not impressed. I am in the not impressed catagory. I was very impressed with SFX when I gave them my WM week (Labor Day week) at the Canadian in Vancover. They gave me all kinds of extras and I got a free diamond membership. Then, when it came time to give me an exchange I got offered garbage. I was looking for only Marriotts or Hyatts or Hiltons but I kept being offered non branded resorts. I was very hopeful at first but as time passed and I got no exchange I was first told SFX didn't get the inventory I wanted then more time passed and I was told what I gave up was too small. I got the impression SFX is the place to go for Manhattan Club, though.

I'm not an SFX hater, I just think they take care of certain members first, regardless of those members deposits and then everyone else gets what is left. In the end, I found an exchange on-line with SFX. I settled for only a studio but it is on Hilton Head Island for Easter week at a bed and breakfast. A full breakfast is included every day for a week and so is wine and beer at night. I happen to have a Marriott Surfwatch unit (obtained through II) for Easter week but we needed another room. At this point, I am skeptical II will find another week for me, so that is why I went with SFX.

I think if you want San Francisco, Manhattan Club, Mexico, and you are not afraid of unbranded resorts, SFX is a great trade company. I will admit, SFX provides personal service, just I am not at all impressed with their inventory. I do not think SFX gets many (if any) prime weeks at the prime branded resorts.

I've had the best success with RCI, but they cost the most in trade fees. II is second in my book and then SFX. Just depends what you have to give and what you want in return. I use II for my Marriott exchanges because there is just no getting around the power of Marriott preference in II. I can usually bank on getting a great week from RCI and SFX is probably a trade company I won't use any longer unless I want Manhattan Club.

Rci Does Charge Search Fees/sfx

Yes, I just tried it on Dec. 4thand they charged me $179 for the search.
In June, 2011 there were no fees.
As for SFX; I have used them twice with great success. Got a 2bd/2ba at the Hacienda Del Mar in Cabo run by Sheraton and a 2bd/2ba Kona Hawaiin Resort run by Wyndam. I've stayed at both properties using RCI and VRI in the past and they are first class.
With SFX; you need to talk to an agent. The online thing shows very little inventory. SFX likes personalized service and the agents will give you their direct numbers to call. I use the free gold membership and it's worked fine.
