You'll be fine in a 4wd Jeep. It's bumpy and you need to pay attention to the larger holes in the dirt road, but it's not that bad. You'll see the locals driving on it back and forth in little pickups, toting tourists for $5...
I have Jeeps reserved on both Maui and The Big Island (Alamo) so I'm hoping its passable. I've taken Those Jeeps on a ton of dirt roads on Maui and Kauai over the years so I'm hopeful ! Thanks
And don't torture anyone by making them ride in the back seat. It's a very rough ride and you'll throw out your rear passengers, even in a hard-top Jeep.
That said, it's worth the drive. We were the only ones down there and it was beautiful!

Big Island Revealed says this is a "very nasty 4x4 road" While we didn't think it was very nasty ... for someone that hasn't done it before ... it could get you in trouble ...
The secret is to use a low gear and let her crawl over the stuff.
