A few weeks ago, I had to cancel a reservation which was protected by Points Shield.
The points did not appear back into my account. When I called HICV, they could not answer my question.
They sent me off to customer service. It took over an hour, but I found out, the points on that reservation were 2019 points which expired in July The representative took the time to look at our reservation history and noticed that we used 2020 points for a stay in Galveston in May. She was able to apply our 2019 points to the vacation we took in May and pull back the 2020 points. She then applied our 2020 points to the reservations I had to borrow from 2021 and put them back into our account.
