Grasshopper Invasion of Las Vegas May Last Weeks, Experts Say

By Neil Vigdor / The New York Times / nytimes.com / July 27, 2019

“A swarm of winged insects enveloped a pyramid: Sound familiar?

An invasion of pallid-winged grasshoppers descended on Las Vegas this past week, taking over the Strip and several of the city’s most popular tourist spots, including the night skies above the Luxor hotel and casino.

The resort, a 30-story pyramid inspired by ancient Egypt, says that its Sky Beam, a powerful column of light issuing nightly from the peak of the pyramid, can be seen by airline pilots as far away as Los Angeles.

But the beam has also become a magnet for grasshoppers, which experts say could linger in Las Vegas for weeks....”

I heard a rumor one Pizza Restaurant is offering Pizzas with deep fried grasshoppers.

Had that happen one time on I40 on the way to Laughlin for the Laughlin River Run biker event. Plague of locusts while thousands of bikes are on the road! Not funny. and the dead, squished ones make it really slippery for a two-wheeled vehicle. Crazy.

That supposedly is true. However, they are imported grasshoppers, not the ones infesting Las Vegas. :)

DW and I just returned from 6 days in LV. Never saw a single grasshopper. Heard some cicadas, though.

We live on the north end of Summerlin, which is on the west side of Las Vegas. We have definitely seen more grasshoppers than normal, but nothing like what they’ve had at the Luxor. Fortunately they don’t harm anything from what we’ve heard, but they are annoying. We do look forward to them to continuing their migration and moving on.

Best regards.

Mike
