I know there are many threads on Tug about this resort and things to do in the area, but what advice can those of you who have been there offer me for visiting during the last week of October? Is it still considered hurricane season? Are there certain things to do at that time of year that are better than at other times of year? Anything not worth doing then? We already plan to see Tulum, Chichen Itza, and Xcaret. Are there other things that are must do/see experiences? Spouse is an amazing photographer, and we're wondering about any nice photo tours we can take?

This will be our first trip to the Yucatan, and we want to make the most of it -- before the world ends on December 21st... ;)

Thanks,
Dave

There is still some risk of hurricanes at that time, however, it is rather low. Three years ago there was a hurricane that skirted the coast during the first week of November.

You didn't say how long you were going to be there. That schedule will keep you pretty busy if it's just a week. You are already hitting very good spots for photography. You can also spend some time exploring Playa del Carmen for some interesting beach and town photo opportunities.

We are currently staying at the Royal Mayan and I would be remiss if I didn't give you this information. Today we took a tour of Chicken-Itza and Ek Elbam with this tour company: http://www.lds-tours.us. Carlos arranged for two of his passengers meet up with us so the four of us could split the cost of the tour. Carlos is an experienced tour guide, an Anthropologist and an expert on the Mayan Culture. It was like a 10 hour class on Mayan history. Ek Elbam was opened to the public 18 years ago and it has features the Chicken-Itaz doesn't have. The pyramid is higher and you can climb to the top, you can't do that at CI any longer. It is MUCH less commerical and Carlos is so knowledgeable it is unbeliveable. We asked for the Non-LDS version which takes away some of the religious aspects of the tour, but that was our preference and wasn't a problem. Of all of the tours we've taken, this was hands down the best one I've ever been on.

Enjoy Cancun.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the ideas! I'll check these things out, for sure. I know the LDS history of Central America -- it'd be interesting to see things from a non-religious perspective. And the idea of "go climb a pyramid" sounds very intriguing. :)
