I remember comments and reviews that the beach entrance is rocky - and I also remember reading about an effort to clean it up and smooth it.
Do we need water shoes, is it recommended? Thank you for any insight!

We were last there in March 2013 and unless things have changed dramatically, you will definitely need water shoes. The beach was very disappointing.

I am only going off friend's recommendations and pics, but for a short cab ride to the water taxi, you can go to Isla Mujeres for the day(s). It is a "real" beach with what appears to be some awesome snorkeling.

You can also take the ferry from Puerto Morales or Playa del Carmen to Cozumel for a day of great snorkeling. Really nice beaches on one side of the island

Personal recommendation time: Playa Uvas had a great clear kayak/snorkel trip.

But we did the onsite snorkel trip from Vida, and it sucked, especially for what it cost. I could have walked south down the beach a mile and just waded out into the water for free.
