We recently had to cancel our upcoming annual holiday to the Marriott Aruba Ocean Club. Dh and I travel alot but for a number of reasons we've avoided Mexico (mainly because about 30 years ago I got deathly ill in Acapulco and ended up in hospital on returning home and something like that stays with you)). Anyway we decided next summer to give the Mayan Riviera a try(pls tell me things have chgd and I wont get this ill again...lol).

We were able to grabl a 1 bdrm(not the lock off) at the Grand Luxxe, but that said we're beach people and Im now noticing numerous reviews panning the beach there. The royal hacienda is also available . Which resort would you choose if you had a choice and why?

The Grand Luxxe experience is quite nice.

Indeed, the beach in front of the resort is not good due to how the beach erodes right in that area. You have to walk about a quarter mile or so either direction to get to a good beach. I do understand there is tentative approval to permanently fix the problem and rebuild the beach, but not before your visit.

The beach at the Royal Hacienda has small waves and virtually no errosion as it is buffered by Cozumel. It is easy to swim, snorkel (though there is not much to see) and kayak (which are provided free).

We've gone once or twice a year, 2-3 weeks total since 2003 to either Cancun or Playa and I got sick once, & it was last year (in Cancun). I don't watch what I eat or drink, never have & still won't. I picked up an intestinal bug somewhere, but where or how I don't know. My guess is grocery bought eggs, some say to boil them to kill anything on the shell. It kept me off the dive boat for 6 days, but that's about it. Have a great trip.

Luckybee, Never stayed @ Grand Luxxe.. Did a tour at Royal Hacienda this past March... Absolutely beautiful...Beach was quite nice, but we prefer Cancun Tri-Royals (Islander, Caribbean, Mayan)... Beach is Amazing.. Hacienda is sorta secluded..

You say u got sick 30 YEARS ago... I wouldn't worry about that. All the resorts have filtration systems.. And we've eaten everywhere without getting sick.. But I can relate, b/c my wife got very sick about 20 years... She vowed she would never return; but we've been going to Cancun 3 years straight.. And can't wait for March 10...

ps.. We are BEACH people also

We are beach people and we own at the Aruba Ocean Club and the Royal Haciendas. We are currently at the Haciendas. The beach is lovely and NOT crowded. We actually are going to the Grand Luxxe in Feb. We know that we will have to use the pool there. Regardless of which one you decide on send me a pm and I'll send you restaurants.

Thanks all for the responses...I think we're going to stick with the Grand Luxe(esp now that the Hacienda isnt showing availability now for the full 1 bdrm)

Ilene...I'd love the restaurant tips when you're at the GL....I know from previous list you and I have the same likes and dislikes in AUA so I'd trust your suggestions :)
