I am not aware of any systematic and deliberate government reviews of the Timeshare Industry, however in Australia, the rough equivalent of the SEC, the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC), have just released their report - "Timeshare: Consumers' experience".
Naturally, while this it is review is from an Australian perspective, it should be noted that Wyndham (Asia Pacific) is covered as the largest timeshare company operating in Australia and when reading the report, I really can't find any differentiation to the "US experience".

Others may find the report of interest.
