Got two speeding tickets in the mail from our trip to Italy

In the mail yesterday were two speeding tickets totaling $280. We drove from Rome to Venice in June and somewhere along the line, the cameras must have caught us speeding though we were not aware of being filmed at any time.
Has anyone had this happen to them? Did you pay it?

Those would be cheap speed tickets in NJ.

:ignore:

Just pay the tickets ... in 10 years when you are in another Euro-zone country, do you want to pay those old tickets and all the surcharges for them still being around?

Did you have a rental car? Otherwise how would the police get your information? I would check with the car rental company to see what info they may have.

Did you have a rental car?

How would they have driven through Europe without a rental car? ;)

The exact same thing can happen when you rent a car in the US. The rental agency provides your info. to the authorities. However, beyond that, they will not get involved.

Just pay the ticket. Unlikely they'll extradite you, but it will keep you from getting nasty letters and keep you in the good graces of the rental outfit and Italy's Gendarmes.

One of the lessons of travel. Sorry it happened to you. I've managed to avoid that one, but the step-son must've thought he was on Germany's Autobahn when he got a camera ticket in England. He would've been thrilled if it was just $280.

They may have borrowed a car from relatives or friends that live there. I have never used a car in Europe, so I don't know, just saying if they used a rental car which they obviously did, then the police would have got the information from the car rental company. I would check with the car rental company and also the dates on the tickets. It could have been someone else who rented the car before or after. Companies do make mistakes! Could have been someone else?

They probably have your passport number so if you ever intend to visit Italy again, be prepared for an interesting experience at Italian immigration on your next visit if you don't pay.

Don't ask how I know. ;)

If you never expect to drive in an EC country or rent from the same rental company again, put them is a desk drawer, or frame them and hang them on a wall.

Yes, we rented a car and I guess they tracked us down that way though it took four and a half months!
I am inclined to pay because I am afraid of the long arm of the law!:crash:

I guess that is what they count on...

I have had home stays with European families ... staying with my host families for several weeks at a time. The culture is DIFFERENT in many ways ... payment is EXPECTED .. sort of like you don't enter a shop to "wander and look" without buying something... and don't touch stuff either ... as they expect you to buy it.

So I don't think the long arm of the law will get in the USA ... but if you get flagged when trying to enter their country or your passport is run for some other reason while in their country (or even the EU) ... I would bet the FINE would be a LOT MORE.

that happened to my brother in law after a trip to Italy and France. I will have to ask what happened with the tickets.

Yes (different European country but same scenario and # of tickets). And no.

Would have paid, if there were easier instructions to pay, or if the police dept or rental car co would have helped, but we couldn't find a translator and couldn't figure out out how to do it.

Ultimately we found someone who spoke the language, and either emailed or called them and heard back, and we were told they had dropped the charges.

We haven't been back yet, so don't know what will happen if/when we return.

I read on other sites last year about avoiding Italy's ZTL areas in Florence and Pisa. Some had posted they got a ticket 7-9 months after being in Italy, tracked down via their car rental agency. They just paid.

We were lucky, missed our turn in Florence, had to go round the block. Italian car rental garage returns are very poorly marked. Went back to the Westin to have them call in another zone pass for us; they were a little nervous about it. It's been 15 months, so far no fines, knock on wood ...

I incurred a speeding fine in Spain in April, 100 euros reduced to 50 if I paid within 30 days so I did, not least because I didn't fancy being turned down for rental cars or facing some stiff penalty when I return.

Also received a 120 euro fine for driving in Austria without a toll pass. We rented in Munich and decided to pop to Salzburg for the day but didn't realise we had to pay for a toll pass (10 euros).

Both times the rental agency handed over my details to the police and were kinds enough to charge me for doing so.

Wow, that's a long time for the tickets to catch up with you. We went to France in June (DW, DGD and I), and before we went I read up on the ubiquitous speed cameras. So I was very careful to obey the laws. I've been assuming that since it's nearly Thanksgiving now, I was free and clear. Now you're making me nervous again that there may be some tickets out there still waiting to catch up with me.

Good luck on your situation. If I were you, I'd just go ahead and pay the fines. $280 is actually pretty reasonable, especially compared to what you must have paid to take the trip in the first place.

Just back from England where there were signs every 4-8 miles saying speed checked by camera BUT there were never any speed limit signs on the freeway so I was always nervous about my speed on the freeway (the country roads had lots of speed limit signs)

Pay Up!!

We thought we'd ignore the two zona prohibita violations that came from Lucca months after we returned home in the fall of 2013 (also got a parking ticket there that we paid at the time) since there was no way to pay via credit card. Well, fees were added for not paying and suddenly this summer we now were being harassed by a collection agency based out of Michigan!

We paid nearly $700 to clear them!! Not happy at all:annoyed:- with Lucca, with our GPS and with Rick Steve's whose advice on where to park in Lucca was outdated. We never would have deliberately driven into forbidden territory, but it's an easy mistake for a tourist to make and very lucrative for Lucca!

We are holding our breath that Pisa has given up on us as we had the same zona prohibita notice from there.

We currently have no plans to return to Italy, but were concerned that a personal "collector" would come ona our house and breaka our legs.

Several years prior Switzerland caught me speeding via a motorway camera. It was so easy to pay that ticket by credit card and it was a fine I deserved.

Freeways Or motorways have the (/) sign.
That means national speed limit applies.
If the UK wants to change the national speed limit they don't need to change a gaZillion signs.

Please pay the ticket. Check the cost in dollars vs euros. Pay by the cheapest.
