Can someone recommend a few golf courses in the Hilton Head area, I realize there are quite a few, but maybe there are some nice one's that have reasonable fees. We are staying at Surf Watch. Thank You.

Oyster Reef is close by--Good layout.
Obviously Harbortown--but only worth it if you are a good player.
The other two on sea pines are good as well--Heron Point and Atlantic Dunes.
Port Royal and Shipyard are usually in terrible shape, crowded but the layouts are good.

Palmetto Hall is close by and is good on all counts.

Depends on your definition of "reasonable fees". If you are used to paying $40-$50 for greens fees/carts per person, then you need to go pretty far off island over to Bluffton to even get close to that. Most on-island courses bottom out around $70-$90 for afternoon rounds, with the Sea Pines and Palmetto Dunes courses being $150-$200+

We like Oyster Reef ($70-$115) and we also found Old South Golf Links ($65-$90) just across the bridge in Bluffton to be a scenic layout on the marsh. The Old South recommendation is heavily qualified though, as the last time we played there back in early June, they had totally lost the greens. Many had huge bare spots and it was like putting on hard sand. Not sure if they have been able to get them rejuvenated by now. If you decide to play there, maybe a call to the pro shop to ask the condition. We've also played the Barony Course in Port Royal and liked it, although it gets a lot of play and gets pretty beat up. Its price is in the same range as Oyster Reef.

I have not played a lot of courses in the area, but also enjoyed Old South and have played there a few times. Also, Bear Creak had a good deal if you were staying at one of the Marriott properties that included lunch. Not a great course, but it was ok.

Played the Barony course once amd would not go back. It was very beat up incredibly slow pace of play

Played Old South this week. Your comments makes the greens more understandable. They are growing in and are a bit long now. I was thinking unkept, but if they lost them they need to let them grow out, unfortunately. They are also very in need of rolling. They are playable though. I took the wife and kids and just played 9 so it worked great for that.

The answer depends on what time of year you are talking about also. Blufton will have the best rates, and there are some good courses there. If money is not object, you have to at least look at Harbortown Golf Links.

I find golfnow the best way to find deals on the island. They usually have specials that are good. Last year, we played at Port Royal ($55). Earlier this year, we played shipyard ($33). Both were very reasonable compared to the list price. This time of year, prices are higher and discount are not as great.

The Palmetto Dunes courses are very nice. We've had positive experiences at Palmetto Hall, Country Club of HHI, Hilton Head National, and of course the Sea Pines courses. If you're a member of a club, you can have your pro call and try to get you on Long Cove, Wexford, Haig Point, or some of the other private clubs. Ours has been able to do that on occasion.

Assume you're familiar with TeeOff or GolfNow websites? If not, go there and check their Hilton Head availabilities. JIMinNC's reply about definition of "reasonable" is worth noting though just to manage your expectations. Unfortunately, like a lot of resort courses, green fees have gone up. But TeeOff/GolfNow have "Deal Times" that can still get you on a Nicklaus course - Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo Run - for $62 with cart...also, Deal Times get really good (great rates) sometimes just a few days before so "shop" for and at different times to get best value.
