At least at Shadow Ridge, owners have traditionally received a 20% discount on rack-rate green fees. In fact, this was one of the selling points when I bought my first week. I have just learned that as a result of a recent "corporate decision" owing to the new points program and the spin-off of the Vacation Club from Marriott, this is no longer the case. Owners still get a discount, but not 20%. What I find particularly galling is that Marriott never informed us of this change. I wonder how many other subtle (or not so subtle) changes we are in for.

I was there last week and got the 20% discount. I also made reservations for when I go back in February and was quoted the discount for my rate.

What is the source of your information?

I also played Shadow Ridge 3 times last week and got the "Owner" rate of $75.00 per round before 9:00am. This was $20 off the list price of $95 so a bit better than 20%.

While in Palm Springs I book tee times with Standbygolf.com or golfnow.com. Great selection of courses and rates far better dealing with the proshop.

Would September or early October be a good time to book this resort to play golf?

Check the course schedules that you want to play. I like October in Palm Desert but lots of course will do over seeding that time a year and close for 2 or 3 weeks.

Marriott's commitment to golf has virtually disappeared. When I purchased my first time shares in the 80's it was clear that golf was a big part of the timeshare experience. Back then there were great discounts, access to top courses and there was always great information on the best courses. Today the discounts, where they exists are minimal. (The guest rates at Doral in December were a joke!)

In addition, the concierge have no clue on which courses to play or the conditions of neighboring courses. (I was shocked when I encountered this lack of golf knowledge when I visited Myrtle Beach) This is very surprising since many top courses are hurting for customers, so I would expect that partnerships with Marriott would be attractive to them. Now when I travel I rely on discount golf sites that are available on the internet.

I strongly suggest you use golfnow.com , you may see Shawdow Ridge, DSV courses, Westin Courses, etc.

The source of information was a manager in the pro shop. I was there mid-December and got the 20% discount, so this is apparently a recent change.
