Golf for beginners near Palm Desert

Can anyone suggest a good driving range and golf course for beginners in the Palm Desert area? I have played many times around PD but I only know the championship ones. I am taking my 8 year old grandson there and I want to introduce him to golf. I called the First Tee course and they are closed for overseeding and they told me the golf academy driving range near the College of the Desert is also closed for renovation at this time. These are both places I had scoped out as they are close to where we will be staying. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. Harvey
