As many of you already know, the cruise industry serving Alaska has been shutdown for this summer season. Additionally, many of the national parks are opening with very limited access, in some cases, not until July.

If you are planning a visit to Alaska and you do not live there, you must obtain a negative test for COVID-19 PRIOR to arrival . . . or face the quarantine procedure upon arrival, which includes being tested there (and quarantining until your negative result is obtained) . . . or remain quarantined for the current 14 days per the governor's orders.

This is a developing story, as it was only announced late last week, with promises of more details yesterday . . . which were still pretty sketchy. They are making this up as they go, with the utmost of concern for their residents. I get that . . . but unfortunately, getting the test isn't that easy if you have no symptoms or haven't been exposed AND if you do, it is next to impossible to get casual testing done and results back within the 72 hours as required (prior to your arrival in Alaska).

So please be sure you are well informed as to what's happening up there. Our trip isn't until July 11th, so we're hopeful there will be continued revisions/improvements over the coming six weeks.

yes, it's not easy visiting Alaska with a 14 day quarantine
hopefully that will be lifted by July

A few in S and VA, a single resort in NC, MD, PA, and UT, plus Jamaica and the Bahamas
I saw an interview with the governor a little over a week ago. One of the reasons it is so strict is they have thousands of visiting seasonal workers in the fishing and seafood processing industry during the summer and like the meat packing industry, close working conditions (boats and canning factories) can create a flash point for the virus.

We were going to ride our bikes north on the Dalton Hwy a few years ago. I had some health problems the first year. My riding friend had health problems the next year and I was still recovering. He was still recovering last year but we made a long test run. This year was go time but then the covid 19 thing happened.

Oh well, maybe next year.

Visitors can avoid the quarantine requirement *IF* they have a negative test within 72 hours of their trip to Alaska.

That's so very unfortunate! I tell my husband ALL THE TIME . . . I never take travel for granted, especially as we get older and our general health becomes less reliable as we enter our 60's.

I hope you're able to make to Alaska Bill. It's a wonderful place, with such wide open nature and interesting people. I've become pretty spoiled, having been able to travel there many times over the past 15 years.

Yes! They also have in most typical years, a high volume of international workers in the travel & hospitality industry. That has been deeply cut due to the lack of cruise ships & those visitors to Alaska.

I get the "why" they are doing it. My issue/concern is that the requirements are next to impossible (at least today) to meet. Getting the required COVID test with documented negative results within 72 hours of your trip is largely impossible for many people . . . especially if you are not experiencing symptoms or have not been exposed as evidenced by tracing requirements.

yes, getting results of the COVID 19 test within 72 hours of boarding could be a problem

Maybe , lol. I was thinking of taking a ride to some where this week but many places are closed. I heard Idaho is open. Maybe Sun Valley.
