I don’t have reservations until May and assumed I wouldn’t be able to leave u til at least june. My sisters and my son are telling me to stay put. my Friend told me today 5hey are leaving Wednesday, things are so much worse in Florida. There son has left their car at the airport and filled their house with groceries. They will be quarantined when they get to North Dakota.
so I started thinking, how would I get home from the airport. It is about 65 miles. Would they let me rent a car? my daughter is alone with three kids, age 5 to 10. She is working from home somehow with the three kids home and no one to help her.
we have not had contact with anyone except my sister for over three weeks, I would think we are safe now. But we could be exposed at three different airports, two different planes, and getting back and forth from the airport. I wouldn’t be able to help with the grandkids for two weeks of quarantine.
I think it would help if the news could give us some idea of how the people caught the virus, how they were exposed, if anyone survived. Instead we keep hearing the numbers are growing, lee county has one of the highest death rates, and the numbers are going to keep going up. So the question is run now or run later. I would be going to a rural area, there haven’t been many cases reported there.

Personally I think you may be better off staying put. If you are equipped where you are to stay at home, have limited/no contact with outside individuals why risk being exposed with the logistics of 3 airports, 2 planes and a rental car. I'm not sure which airport in FL, but if it is the one that all those cruise ship passengers are going through right now...I would avoid that place.

I think you might be better staying where you are. If you have currently had little to no exposure to anyone and then leave and have to change planes and then try to get a car to rent it gives more chances to be exposed.

My cousin works for United and every day they are cutting flights and changing stuff up by the day. It's ultimately your decision and I will keep you and your hubby in my prayers....take good care of yourself...

IMO - stay where you are & continue to have ZERO contact with anyone . ( If your sister is also having zero contact
than she too is safe / and could be seen ) Shopping - breaks your safety barrier .

1) - Covid 19 spread around the world through travel .
It will get to rural areas .[ ( soon - IMO) so there is no benefit to running now or later ]

2) call your daughter & grandkids / don’t travel to be with them
( visit when this is over / probably many months from now)

3) Don’t panic / you did the right thing by avoiding contacts for the last 3 weeks - continue with
that plan.

You and your husband are in a very high risk group. Your daughter is younger and healthier. Yes, she is stressed but she will get thru this. She will be happier knowing you are safely at home and will live to see them in a few months.
And believing “things” are better elsewhere is what has gotten the world in such a bad place. No one is immune to this no matter where you live.
Stay home, stay alone, stay safe.

Stay where you are. Sounds like an exhausting trip, which would not help you stay healthy.

This isn't forever. Once the worst of "the storm" passes, you'll be able to make that journey.

My Brother had the same decision to make, stay put in Florida or return home to Pennsylvania. He opted to stay in Florida. His reasoning - He didn't want to go through the Fort Lauderdale and Philadelphia Airports and didn't want to get on a plane with who knows who...

You should stay where you are unless it is possible for you to drive home. But even then you have to be concenred with getting a hotel and meals on the way up.

My brother just had the opposite thing. He had to drive up from Florida for his NY house closing sale. That was a few weeks ago, however. Now he can't wait to get back to Florida.

Covid 19 is spread through person to person contact most of the time. Items contaminated by a person can infect a person who comes in contact with the item and touches their eyes, nose and mouth. The virus can stay active on items. Sunlight degrades the virus on items.

I live in a rural area in the north. Wednesday we had 0 cases and I was elated!!! Today we have 3. We are a small town. I would recommend that you stay where you are. Your daughter will just have to deal with her situation. You are opening yourself up to exposure and it could prove to be fatal. Especially if she is in rural New York. The governor authorized the national guard to take ventilators from less busy hospitals and “redistribute” them to busier areas. So if you do become sick, you might been deemed expendable.

Probably because they both went out. We've had our television service go out, and out internet service go out, but luckily not both at the same time.

What I meant was why are they out in the first place?

I am not going north to help my kids. They will manage. I have not left the house for weeks. My son’s in-laws live around the corner from me here and does all my grocery shopping. They aren’t going north to help the kids either.
When I was their age I had two little kids, 4 horses in the back yard, finished my PhD, and had 4 part time jobs and an unhappy husband. My kids will cope OK as long as they don’t catch this.

My Mom (74) snowbirds near St. Pete. She was originally scheduled to come back up next week. I advocated for her to stay there an extra few months, but she decided to come home early---she drives---almost two weeks ago. I wasn't happy about that decision, but understood her desire to get home. We are still mutually isolating, and will for the foreseeable future to keep her chance of infection down.

If you can stay put, I think that's the safest thing to do.

I agree with your conclusion that the OP is probably better off for the time being, at least if they have the ability to stay put for some time. This situation is going to get a lot worse before it gets better, unfortunately.

As to using the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, please let's not create inaccurate rumours. We don't need them in this time of heightened fear. The passengers will not be using the terminal itself. They will be going through screening and any necessary customs and security checks at the dockside at Port Everglades before being transported to the airport. Here is the process.

First, all the passengers coming off the cruise ships today and tomorrow to go home, are being checked and only if they are symptom-free are they allowed to disembark. Second, they are all wearing masks and put directly onto privately chartered buses and driven straight to the airport. Third, they are not going through the airport terminal or anywhere where any member of the public would be allowed. The buses are being escorted directly onto the tarmac and are stopping directly in front of the stair-ramps for the aircraft. The passengers are then going directly from the buses onto the privately chartered aircraft that will be taking them home. There is no risk to the normal flying public.
