Please help a newbie, until this week I have never purchased a timeshare. I thought I did all my research but well I guess I missed a few things. I purchased week 51 at Orlando International Resort club 2/2, I checked with RCI and they said it is a points resorts and told me my point value 75,500 prior to purchasing but now I am being told that I bought a fixed week and thats part of the weeks program and I don't have any points, that this resort is a "dual resort". My contract does say week 51 ...The whole point of the one I bought was for the high points to be used at other resorts. I'll never use this resort as I live in Orlando. I was told I could swap week for week even up but the whole idea was to get the most bang for my buck. I have tried talking to the resort and to Wyndham but keep going in circles. Does any one has any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Most if not all RCI "Points" resorts have many owners who own weeks that are not associated with RCI points. To be sure that you're purchasing a week which will get you RCI points, you must buy a week which has be "converted" (or is already in RCI points).

For many people the week you own (week 51) is of very high value because there are many people who wish to travel during the xmas week. Therefore the sellers may not have been aware that you wanted a week which was associated with RCI points.

You can "convert" your week to points, but most of the time the fee the resort charges to do so is so large that buying a "converted week" is much, much cheaper.

Thanks! I guess I didn't understand that I was buying a fixed week. I going to make the best of it and deposit it and hope that I get into where I want. Maybe this slow economy will be good for something after all. If it doesn't work out I can always sell it since I only paid $26 total.

Knottymaid, Late deposits to RCI have less trade power, early deposits have more, so you should deposit your 2009 week as well as your 2008 week now. Most likely the 2009 week will have much better trade power. Good luck, and enjoy your bargain purchase!

You said "until this week I have never purchased a timeshare" Can you still back out of the deal? If so maybe that would be best.

I love to timeshare, as do most people who post regularly on this board. There are many different ways to make the best use of a TS. Points is certainly one of them. There are many "point" TS systems. RCI points is only one of them. You may find that another system would work better for you.

Good Luck

Some people will buy near where they live as they often can use the facilities at the resort year-round. Not sure if that is of value to you, but you can always deposit your week and exchange elsewhere (for $26, you aren't too committed).

Orlando doesn't have the best exchange power as there are many resorts there, but your week 51 may offset that and give you fine exchange power.

When I purchased it I bought specifically for the points 75,500 per RCI. I thought I was being slick, Lucaya offers a studio for 22k the week I wanted to go and I thought I'd be able to get 3 weeks for 1. OOPS! I already asked to get out but it doesn't seem like it's going to happen but all aside it's a learning experience and now I fully understand the difference between buying weeks vs points.
