I bought a shutter to physically block my camera when I want it OFF.

Personally, I can understand what happen, she forgot to turned off her computer camera. You are forgiven. That was an embarrassing moment for the senator. IMO.

Can't you just put a piece of tape over the lens... not scotch?

You can, but it can leave adhesive behind which would blur the image if you want/have to use the camera.

The shutter's are cheap and work well. The tape also works, but not as convenient if you do many calls and need to remove and apply it all the time.

We do video calls all the time for work, so my shutter is opening and closing every day.

I have an Acer Chrome book, it has a green LED to show when the camera is on. Its easy to click the camera icon to turn it off, we use Google Meet, never tried Zoom.
