Has any snowbird used a FREEZE ALARM to monitor their home in the cold state while away in FL? I am thinking of getting this Freeze Alarm which basically allows me to call home and get an updated inside temperature at the home. I know the kids will be by but this seems that added layer of "peace of mind" as a home owner I believe is needed.

I'm sorry I don't have the details, but my snowbird folks had such an alarm that was linked up to the fuel oil company. The fuel oil company had a list of emergency contact numbers. (Luckily for me my brother was #1 on that list.) It actually came in handy one year. For some reason the oil burner stopped functioning. My brother was called and able to meet the serviceman at the house to get things going right.

You might contact your heat provider to see if they offer such a service. I know it probably came at a cost, but it was worth it in the end.

Freeze Alarm

I've heard that there is a device available to detect when the house temperature drops below a certain level indicating a furnace failure.

The Freeze Alarm model automatically calls up to three telephone
numbers when the temperature drops or if the power is out - but
what happens if the phone service goes out too....

Most phone companies have battery back ups that will last for a couple of hours after power loss. In most cases, power will be restored before anyone notices the loss of phone service.
