I'm using the free WIFI at Marriott BeachPlace right now, with my laptop, and it is very annoying. The connection ranges from 'very good' to 'low' and often just cuts out and I have to 'repair' it. I found this in another 'free' internet Marriott earlier last week as well...sometimes the connection was great and fast, and at other times it was slower than dial-up.

Is this normal?

At the core of the system, there still has to be a connection to the internet that is shared with everyone that's connected to that wifi system at that time. If you have a lot of folks trying to do the things at the same time, it can bog down the system.

Complain to the resort. They may need to install an internet connection with greater bandwidth, and they won't do it unless enough people complain.

If the connection strength to the wireless network is ranging like that while you are in the same location and also needs to be rebuilt like that it is likely that there is a source of interference affecting the network intermittently.
