I cancelled a RT companion fare reservation in June. And then later had to fly to Honolulu. We were wary of seating spacing for such a long flight, so got OW 1st class, and then companion fare doesn't apply. I could use the Alaska wallet credit from only the cancelled full fare tkt on our OW reservation.
It was nice tho' to wait for our flight in the Alaska lounge, and minimize our time at the boarding gate.

We'll fly back home sometime in September, date TBD, so will use up the companion fare credit then in regular main cabin seats.

Originally we wanted to fly main cabin and pay extra for exit row, but those were unavailable outbound. Returning, we'll skip the exit rows, as I doubt any flight will be even half full. Our flight over was only about 25% full.

It sounds like a better deal than a companion fare. The way I read it, there is NO fee for the second passenger. With a Companion Fare there is $99.

For those with a companion fare credit from a cancelled reservation, it's about a wash either way, or more $ out of pocket for 2nd person taxes and fees.

It's much better for those who don't have Alaska credit card or haven't used their companion fare option.

What do you mean "companion fare credit?" Do you mean credit for a cancelled flight (that happend to be a companion fare reservation)? If so, wouldn't it be $99 cheaper to use the credit with the promotion, than with a companion fare discount code? I think this is what Luane meant.

Yes, I think that's what I meant. If you can get a second ticket without have to pay any fees (two for the price of one?) that's a better deal than paying the $99 for the companion fare. I got a companion fare returned to me when I cancelled a flight. I guess that's what is meant by a "companion fare credit". I haven't tried to use it, but I'm thinking that if I did I would have to pay the $99 for the second passenger, unless that's being waived right now. But it still seems better to use the current promo, pay no fee, and then use the companion fare later.

I tried it for Cabo and it didn't pan out well, you pay the taxes and fees on the second ticket but it is Main Cabin with seat selection and bags. So American and United has similar fares in Saver fares with no seat selection or checked bag, United nothing but a personal item. My status or credit card gives me the checked bag.

Good point. I guess that because I use Alaska only to fly to Hawaii, that I had that stuck in my head.

A humorous point: My wife and I were going to Cabo San Lucas for a significant anniversary. Our choices were AeroMexico and Alaska. We didn't want to fly on a Mexican airline. So, for $20 to $40 or so more we booked on Alaska. When we arrived at the airport we found out that if you book on Alaska you fly on their partner - - wait for it - - AeroMexico. But the plane was new, the food and service were good.

Yes both you and Luanne are right.
I mistakenly thought only my full fare credit was added to my Alaska wallet when I cancelled companion reservation, with the companion fare credit to my husband's Alaska acct wallet. But when I double checked, the entire original amount for both tkts were applied to my subsequent new ressie purchase.

It's tempting, but we don't know yet when we can return home as my mother is still on the mend. My husband thinks there will be more deals later, especially after schools start, and there are more states such as Hawaii extending their 14 day quarantines.

Just hope Alaska and other carriers can survive without laying off too many people

I needed a short mileage run to get me over the hump to MVP Gold so I was able to book a cheap trip to Austin and drag the wife along for our anniversary. Hawaii trip is cancelled so we’ll float around Lake Travis.
