Here's a simple demonstration why washing your hands with soap and water is more effective that using Purell or other hand sanitizers:

Never underestimate the power of just washing your hands -- it might be the single best defense in keeping yourself healthy.

Agree! I have always instinctively felt that hand washing using running water must wash away more germs that using hand sanitizer. Sure, use the hand sanitizer when you can't wash your hands, but wash those hands whenever you have the opportunity.

When my kids were little, they stopped sharing illnesses once I instituted a strict hand washing procedure (which was to sing the entire ABC song including the ending - "now I know my ABC's...). It worked like a charm.

Hand sanitizer also has alcohol in it and can irritate the sensitive.

Friction is the key to good hand washing. Soap, scrub getting all surfaces of your hand for at least 15 seconds, rinse and dry completely.

Why are you carrying H2O in your purse?
Suggestion only you should carry a small bottle of H2O, a bar of soap and some Lysol wipes in your purse. LOL

I was at a health fair this morning, and they had a handwashing station. We rubbed 'sanitizer' over our hands, then looked at them under a special light. (It was really a formula with light-sensitive sparkles). My palms were good, but my thumbs and the back of my hands had missed areas, which apparently is very common. Good visual on how to really wash. The person at the booth said sanitizer is as good as soap and water.

I always kept Lysol wipes in my car for long road trips and using those rest stop rest rooms- just to wipe the toilet seat -and then used the paper seat covers, which I also keep in the car. Half the time I forget them when I go in anyway/

Other than that, never use the wipes.

I don't know how a person would keep from touching his/her own face. I find myself rubbing my eyes all of the time, and Rick is even worse. I told Rick that maybe if we were bandaids on our index fingers, we would stop doing that. Rick said, "How often are you going to change the bandaid?" Every time I wash my hands. Now there will be a shortage of bandaids in our house. I hope people don't catch on to my idea, so I can still buy bandaids.

Soap and water is fine when it is easily accessible, problems arise when it is not.

Example walking through airport, touching any handrail, you then have to go find a sink. Getting into a car or building and touching the door handles, you then have to go find a sink. Going to the grocery store and using a cart you touch the handle, now what. It is all the other items that you need that purell crap for.

Reporter on NBC did a piece about trying not to touch her face for an hour. Still did it about 13 times even knowing she was trying not to and was being filmed. What needs to happen is touching your face in public is as frowned upon as scratching your crotch. When's the last time you scratched your crotch or butt in public? Simply doesn't happen because we are conditioned against it with a hand slap from an early age. And hopefully everyone washes their hands when they hit the front door. Of course even though we both made a beeline for sinks when we come home from shopping today, we had to get in the door by handling the car door handles and house door knob.

I thought about that bread experiment the other day.

Wash your hands whenever you can.....but if you need, hand sanitizer is better than nothing.

Good example: pumping gas. I have a little bottle in my car cuz you know those handles NEVER get cleaned. Also good for fast food on the fly.

Gasoline/diesel pumps are infamous for dirt. Think about it, you're pumping a highly toxic fluid into your car/truck, and the fumes can waft onto the handle. It's very simple, put a pair of latex work gloves in your car. Put them on to pump, remove when you're done. Even if there are no viruses on the pump, at least you did not get any fuel on your hands. I do it all the time on my semi, wear latex gloves when pumping fuel and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). If you can afford it, you could buy a box of disposable work gloves, throwing them out after you're done filling your tank.

-when you can’t buy hand sanitizer - just buy a bottle of cheap Vodka
wash your hands in it & then take a swig -

you’ll kill lots of germs & fix any coronavirus anxiety.
LOL

When out to lunch today I saw a woman and her husband use the hand sanitizer she had in her purse. People! There was a bathroom with real soap and water just steps away.

And it is impossible to try to hand sanitize 100% - I went to Stop and Shop for two things and I tried to pay attention to how many things we come into contact with and cannot be done 100%. The sink handles are dirty - you wash your hands and then with clean hands - unless there is a restroom with paper towels - you need to turn it off. I need to get my reading glasses in and out. I need to put in my pin number.

My hand sanitizer bottle is dirty on the outside.

Keeping our hands off our face is not easy either. We can try of course, but I am not going to make myself crazy.

I actually saw a soccer mom at the store yesterday buying 3 giant bottles of no-name vodka. She told the checker they were using it to sanitize things. I said it needed to be 60% alcohol per the CDC, and vodka is 40%. She ignored me and seemed baffled.

Nowadays most restrooms have that infernal machine that blows germy air onto your hands at 90mph, and then nothing to use to open the door. Public restrooms should all be required to have doors that open outward. If they're the sort that require the door to lock, there should be something like a crash-bar that you can just back into; if not, no lock at all.

I found a small drug store in my area selling rubbing alcohol; but it contain
only 50% alcohol. They were the only retail & drug store in the area with alcohol.
I purchased only two (2) bottles now I need to find some alcohol at 90% to mixed the 50% alcohol to bring it up to 70%. LOL.
