For the fellow Canadians out there.

Aeroplan just started a promotion (Nov 21 to Dec 12) where you could earn (between Starwood's and Aeroplan's promotions) as much as almost 88% bonus transferring your SPG points to them.

Doesn't quite make up for the new partner fuel surcharges, etc. but it's a start...

If you transfer 80,000 SPG points, Starwood gives you a 25% bonus (an extra 5,000 per 20,000 transferred), making it 100,000 Aeroplan points.

Then Aeroplan will give you another 25,000 points, making it 125,000 Aeroplan points.

That's 45,000 extra Aeroplan points for your 80,000 SPG points.

Here's the link with the details:

http://www1.aeroplan.com/promotions/promotion_details.do?promotion=promo_prj101340_Aeroplan

You can get an extra 25,000 Aeroplan points from each 100,000 points you transfer from a different partner (i.e. American Express Membership Rewards). That one's only a 25% bonus.

Beauty, eh? :D

Eight comic books,
All Seven packs of smokes, six packs of two-four,
Five golden touques!
Four pounds of backbacon, three French toast, two turtlenecks,
And a beer,
On my tree!

Aeroplan is looking at the cumulative transferred amount per partner over the promotion period, so you can transfer 80,000 from SPG in 20,000 blocks if you want to get the maximum benefit from both SPG and Aeroplan.

The Air Canada redemption chart:

http://www1.aeroplan.com/use_your_miles/travel/flights/air_reward_chart.do

Depends on how you fly, but it seems like this is yet another example of StarOptions converting to Starpoints and then out to air miles which can have substantial added value.

148,100 StarOptions for $1,250 MF at Lagunamar converts to 79,200 Starpoints for 5 Stars like YYJMSP. AeroPlan is a 1:1 transfer (usually). Starwood ups that to almost 100,000 air miles for transferring out to AeroPlan and AeroPlan (for a limited time) can up that 100,000 air miles to 180,000 air miles for redemptions.

That's enough for 4 economy class round trip tickets or 2 business class round trip tickets (and change back) from Canada to Hawaii. Or, 3 economy class round trip tickets or 2 business class round trip tickets from Canada to Europe.

Go Canucks! :cheer: ... eom

Too bad that's not US Airways or Southwest or Continental.

Be very careful with aeroplan values, as they charge a very large fuel surcharge on redemptions. Those free tickets to Europe now come with hundreds of dollars of fuel surcharges added on to the price of the ticket if you fly Air Canada. They also started charging them on Lufthansa. Flights on United have not been charging huge fees yet, but it's probably only a matter of time.

I'd only convert starpoints to aeroplan if you have a specific plan to use them right away, and you've checked to see what fees will be associated with that plan with a dummy booking on the aeroplan website.

Also...Are you sure your're from Chicago and a Canucks fan?!?

I'd also add that not only are the associated surcharges nearly equal to purchasing some flights the process of releasing reward seats has also changed - in the past seats would open up 331 days prior to travel date and top tier members get preferred access etc. Now they release reward seats on an ad-hoc basis (top tier or not) making it very difficult to redeem for key periods i.e. March break etc.

So if you are a top tier member with specific travel dates be aware it's going to be very difficult and the fees in some cases will be equal to purchasing outright. If you are not top tier it will be even more difficult.

GO FLAMES GO!! (Nice to see the 'Hawks get put in their place the other night).

Correction -- 80,000 SPG + 20,000 SPG bonus = 100,000 Aeroplan + 25,000 Aeroplan bonus = 125,000 Aeroplan (not 180,000)

Take off a few tickets due to the math error, but pretty close. :)

We like to think of it as the incremental/upgrade between economy and business class. The extra 25,000 Aeroplan points basically bumps one more ticket to Europe to business class, which is definitely worth it...

AC is a member of Star Alliance, so you can Aeroplan points to get tickets on US Airways serviced destinations; however, the redemption rates may be different.

To be honest....I hate using the Star Alliance Network to try and book flights. Its hard enough booking regular award flights.
