look at trip in late may, early june 2013 for 25th anniversary. Wife is looking at Kauai as island of choice.

Plan is to fly from RDU to Phoenix and hang a couple days with step brother. Fly out of Phoenix to kauai not sure where airport is located.. or best way to get there from phoenix.

Not sure about available resorts on island at this time or best side of island for that time of year.

In doing some looking at air fares it appears the best is flying into phoenix and than over vs stright to island from East coast is less costly.

aslo things to see or/and do on island including rental cars.

Ideas welcome on all accounts.

A good place to find ask questions about Hawai'i is the Trip Adviser Hawai'i forums. A good group of people & with a lot of good suggestions.

http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g28932-i36-Hawaii.html

A place that is strongly recommended on the TA forums for car rentals is:

http://www.discounthawaiicarrental.com/?gclid=CLz_2YPJza0CFcfe4AodsE1QiA

I used them to book cars for my upcoming 3 week visit to Hawai'i & was able to book cars with only a $10 / day extra fee for my 23 YO daughter to be on the contract. A big plus for me. :whoopie:

There is no bad side, however, there is a cooler/wetter side and a dryer/sunnier side. The north shore (Princeville) is cooler and wetter, thus more tropical. The south shore (Poipu) is dryer and sunnier.

Check the TUG Ratings and Review for Kauai resorts.

USAirways does a direct flight from Phoenix to Kahalui, Kauai. It leaves about 10:30 in the morning and gets to Kauai early afternoon. It's the best option from Phoenix. You can do a multi city ticket and it really costs little more than doing the entire trip in one day.

Kahului (OGG) is where the int'l airport in on Maui. The Int'l airport on Kauai is at Lihui. (LIH)

It's a long swim to Kauai from Kahului. :)

There is a US Airways flight from Phoenix to Lihu'e... US Airways 146 departing Pheonix at 11:15 a.m. (assuming its everyday). I know because our trip is booked with US Airways with a connecting flight in Phoenix.

Here's an anecdote to perhaps help you decide between south (dry) versus north (wet).

After one our visits to Po'ipu (south side) shortly after we started going to Hawai'i, my wife started talking with the mom of a family that was waiting for the same mainland flight that we were going to be on. That family was from San Diego, and the mom mentioned that they liked to go to the north side because it was so lush and green, unlike San Diego. DW commented that we liked to go to Po'ipu because it was sunny and warm, unlike Seattle. I piped up and said if I wanted to see lush green ferns and moss I didn't need to travel to 3000 miles; for that I could just open the door and look at my roof.

look at trip in late may, early june 2013 for 25th anniversary.

Travel to Hawaii and leave prior to Memorial Day weekend and you will find the best rates for air travel and best exchange on a timeshare. Once summer rolls around and all the kids are out of school, it is peak season and the price goes way up on airfare. Also, avoid traveling Memorial Day weekend. Usually, traveling during the first week of June is ok, because most schools are still in session. So if needed, plan your trip to return home in early June.
