I'm going to Cancun in January 2009. As we all know, airfares are going up steadily. I live on the east coast and am thinking about flying to somewhere in the south or southwest and then getting a flight from there to Cancun if it would be cheaper than flying from the east coast. I usually fly out of Philadelphia or Baltimore and if I were to go this route, would probably try to fly into an airport where Southwest flies.

Any ideas? Any advice on airfares to Cancun?

Thanks,

BigTom

I'd be looking for a non-stop flight too! You might as well start checking prices now. It's never too early.

Thanks folks. I've been checking flights for a while and will continue.

Newark,NJ has a lot of deals to Cancun for some reason, but for me it is a terrible 2+ hour stretch in the wrong direction. But, in the end still may be well worth it.

Generally speaking, longer haul flights are cheaper- on a cents-per-mile basis- than shorter flights because of airport landing fees, TSA fees and taxes. Also doing the trip in stages certainly means airport delays, potential lost or delayed luggage, increased cost now that many airlines are charging per-bag-per-leg, possibly more trips through security.

I just can't see any advantages- especially over flying from a major population center (busy airport, competitive airlines) to splitting this trip.

I suppose if you have a bunch of Southwest coupons, and at least one leg each way is free and you have lots of extra time, you could check rates from other Southwest cities like Houston or Ft. Lauderdale. My hunch is that a lcc flight or consolidator ticket to Cancun direct will be hard to beat.
