We fly first class, so that makes everything more difficult. United originally had us nonstop to Maui out of Denver but wouldn't give us seats together. We chose seats but United reduced the size of the aircraft from 777 to 757. Less first class seats. People who requested window seats all got window seats. That left us three rows apart on the aisle seats. Rick got a refund of the points, which was good.
So then we booked Alaska and saved some money. I added the insurance this time, something I rarely do, but the flight was cheap on Alaska: Denver > PDX > overnight in Portlan> Maui on Monday. Alaska cancelled the flight from Denver to PDX tomorrow. This was 4:30 PM. The text said they would get back to us with an alternate flight. Nope. Two hours later, Rick called Alaska and the message said no one would be able to call us back for 10 hours.
We worked on a flight to somewhere west first, got SFO> Maui on Hawaiian, then we booked United from Denver. The thing we noticed was flights were disappearing right before our eyes. Southwest was $393 each, one way to SFO from Denver. An hour before, it was $233. We booked first class on United and got to choose seats, and it was the same price as SW.
Covid tests came back as negative. That was a relief. But we had to get to Maui within 72 hours of the Covid test. So we are arriving in time to meet that deadline. All in all, storms can really put a crimp in one's plans. I am glad it worked out, but it's $400 per person more. Good thing we are staying six weeks.
