10+ year owner, making it work for us.

Went to an owner update and salesman made a huge deal about using Wyndham Reward points to book airbnb/vrbo rentals. 15,000 pts a night like hotels. Has anyone else heard this? He acted like it was a new perk. He even showed me the Airbnb he planned on renting with his reward points. Cant find it anywhere on the reward website - can, however, find cottages.com etc. Called Wyndham destinations, was transferred around a few times and no vacation planners knew anything about it. More lies? Something coming in the future?

Planning on calling salesman, just wanted to ask here first.

Lies, believe me. There is nothing coming in the future like he is talking about. These salespeople will say anything to make a buck, which makes them beyond disgusting. Sleazeballs.

You can get some Wyndham hotel rooms for 15,000 Rewards points, but many of the nicer hotels are now 30,000. So, there is some truth to what he said. That isn’t a new perk, however. I haven’t heard anything about vrbo and airbnb reservations through Wyndham.

Contact Wyndham Rewards - which is the program owned by the hotel chain that the salesperson is referring to. Contacting Wyndham Destinations, the timeshare division, is not the right path - they do not own the WR program nor do they administer or manage the WR program. You are barking up the wrong tree so to speak.

After 40+ years of T/S ownership, I am no longer "an owner"
I am a Wyndham owner and also travel using Wyndham branded hotel properties. I have a Wyndham Rewards account through my hotel stays, but do not have anything tied to my t/s owernship. They try to tell me all about "paying my MF with the rewards" from using their program (credit card) . . . but it really is not a good value to do so.

As usual it's not so much outright lies as half truths couched in less than clear terms. You can use WR points to book into Redemption WVR and Redemption Cottages. A subset of what is listed in WVR is also listed on AirBnB/VRBO - as the owners of the condos often list their inventory using multiple listing services to appeal to a wider audience. So when the salesperson says that you can book into AirBnB/VRBO inventory - that's not correct on it's face - you cannot use WR points to book directly into AirBnB/VRBO - at least not that I know of. What did the sales rep "show you" exactly? Chances are he's showing you AirBnB/VRBO inventory that is also listed on WVR. You cannot book Redemption WVR or Redemption Cottages online using WR points - you have to contact WR via phone to do so.

Lastly, yes WR is supposedly working on some type of more direct integration with AirBnB/VRBO - this was mentioned by one of the executives at the annual owners meeting last fall, though no specific guidance was given to me when I asked about it. Don't hold your breath that this will happen in the near term. :)

You're right - at one point I may have talked to Wyndham rewards and vacasa and destinations - no one knew. And here's the email confirming. I should have known!

Thank you all for the replies! So tempted to call the salesman and nicely ask if he could walk me though using reward points for the Airbnb I want - like he offered when he gave me his card and 'cell number' as I left without falling for his sales pitch for more points.

I do use their CC to pay all of my MF. Advice on a better way to use reward points? Or a CC with better rewards? We travel often but rarely choose Wyndham hotels to stay at.

The annual fee is a little expensive ($550/yr) but take a look at the Chase Sapphire Reserve. Maintenance fees count as a travel expense so you get a $300 credit annually. 3x pts on travel & dining. TPG rates Chase Ultimate Rewards Points at 2cents/pt (which is pretty high). When booking through the Chase travel website, their Ultimate rewards points are worth 1.5 cents if you have a Sapphire Reserve. There are other benefits as well that may reduce your cost of ownership of the card if you use them. I used to use the Wyndham Rewards card (and still have it) but their hotels are generally poor - fair and the points do expire (I think after 4 years).

I JUST went all in on the Chase Ultimate Reward's system and regret not getting the Reserve right away...as I went with the Sapphire Preferred, but found a solution, my wife got the Reserve, and I just transferred my points from my Chase Business Ink, and my Sapphire Preferred to my wife's Reserve and booked 3 nights at the Venetian and her plane ticket to the Philippines all on points.

I'll probably downgraded my Preferred in a year to the Freedom card getting 1.5x on all purchases so I can use on purchases not falling into business, travel, food categories.

That reserve card's 1.5 multiplier on points is MONEY when booking travel online. It gives you (1-1/1.5) = 33% discount on travel. Many hotels in Vegas match against Expedia's booking engine and even show you Expedia's pricing. Chase uses Expedia's booking engine.

I'll probably load up on Disney Gift cards at Office Depot with my Business Ink getting 5x points at Office Supply Stores.

I should have done this years ago....

We are habitual credit card churners, to get the mileage perks to amass for free airline travel for our larger trips (like Africa, Europe, Hawaii & Alaska). Our primary "general cards" are the Chase Freedom (but only for the bonus categories) and Capital One Venture. I do enough travel to be able to do the "travel purchase eraser" via the 2% but not all people can/do.
