Why else was the player allowed to play after a red card? Seems like people putting their nose in something way it does not belong.

I never thought a red card was warranted but once it is issued it should stand or the referees lose respect.

Now, if there was clear intent to injure someone or a deliberate professional foul to stop an obvious goal scoring opportunity, that’s a different story. But because a red card carries such serious consequences, every one of them should automatically be reviewed by an independent committee after the match.

The FIFA president should have initially said, “Hey Donald, there’s nothing I can do. It’s in the rules.” But apparently there was something that could be done: Article 27. An independent review committee evaluated the incident and lifted the suspension.

I was frustrated when the red card was originally shown, and then wished the suspension hadn’t been overturned because of all the backlash Team USA received afterward. But the fact that Article 27 exists and was used only reinforces my point that these decisions deserve an automatic review before a player is forced to miss the next match.

I think, it would have been better if the committee had changed the red card to a yellow card and said the referee took the wrong call in place of suspended the automatic 1 game suspension of the red card because you or somebody else in this thread mentioned that experts around the world said the incident involving Balogun was more a yellow card than a red card.

I read that England wants the same treatment as Balogun for its player, Jarell Quansah after he received a red card during their last game against Mexico.

It is possible the rules contradict themselves. As somehow it was allowed but other rules say it is final. I am for the rules being stated before hand and followed no matter what the stakes are. All the replays fom dozen of angles makes a referees or umpire jobs harder. Especially with technology on the ball.

The ruling is still final. The player will still be suspended for one game.

Other heads of state have lobbied in the past. If you’re upset about what happened, don’t blame the head of state for making a call to his friend. Blame FIFA.

The independent review committee chose to invoke Article 27, reviewed the incident, and overturned the suspension. That’s where the decision was made.

In my opinion, it was a sham red card from the start but I wasnt happy it was overturned because of all that was going to come with it. If the review committee determined it didn’t warrant a suspension, that’s on FIFA and its own process, not on the person who advocated for a review.

Look at the bright side. The “orange card” gave all the haters something new to complain about.

But let's all focus on the real issue here.... The Red Card system is flawed. Suspending a player for an additional game is ridiculous considering there was zero intent to harm. Soccer has silly rules and silly punishments to go along with those rules.

Yes, I believe the VAR apparently was utilized incorrectly for that foul. Their system is extremely flawed, as is their rule book.

FIFA eventually decided the automatic one match suspension for Quansah was not enough. They increased it to two. This is due to what FIFA calls "serious foul play".
Keep in mind that this so called serious foul play occured at the 54th minute and the victim continued playing the game till the end (90 mins plus extra time).

It was a bad tackle and deserved a red which came with an eviction and one match suspension. Making it a two match suspension is an overkill.

Now that we are out of it, so am I. College Football starts next month. I’m sure I will get an earful from my grandson since his gig as a soccer referee is helping put him thru college. He’s just completed his sophomore year at NCSU and travels all over for games. He was in NJ recently for a 3 day tournament and now he is up in Seattle for a 6 day tournament. He recently came back from a week in England where he was able to shadow some professional accredited refs. He doesn’t have his top tier accreditation yet but he’s working on it and getting paid very good money while doing so. Beats working in a local grocery bagging goods over the summer.
