It's not the cost of the tub -- it's all the molding and tile around it. What a chore.
My best friend refinished tubs for about a year in Seattle. The chemicals were so dangerous to the operator he soon quit. But he said after the vapors were gone, it looked brand new for a lot less hassle than ripping it out and replacing it. Now he lives in Texas and drills wells. He's got a penchant for unusual vocations.

The reason for refinishing is the cost. We had a one piece shower unit in our 2nd bathroom. We removed the unit and had a shower stall put in.
We had to remove some sheetrock and tile flooring along with the trim. Add in the cost of the new shower and other work and the cost went through the roof. There is nothing wrong with our existing tub unit beyond scratches and the color. Its 30 years old. I have seen porcelain tubs reglazed which came out very nice but not fiberglass units.
