From the time I was about 18 to 25 I took my younger sister to the Christmas Lane Parade in Hollywood every year. I wonder if she still remembers it.

When we were younger, we used to go downtown to look at the department store windows before Christmas, they were all very fancy and had such things as trains running around them, or moving snow men. I am sure it is nothing compared to things today, but it was heady stuff for us inner city kids.

We also went out in the car Christmas Eve and went to several of the places where we'd read whole blocks of houses were decorated. There were several areas such as this within a few miles of us. Some were so spectacular they had police directing traffic. Then, when we got home we'd have hot chocolate and sweet rolls (the only time all year).

I still enjoy looking at fancy decorated houses or areas of houses when I can find them.

One of my favorites is driving through a neighborhood here in Greensboro, which hangs handmade, lighted Christmas balls in the trees (put there with potato launchers, not cherry pickers.)

Both local and some national media have picked up on the tradition, and it has spread to other cities and widen the footprint here in Greensboro.

But to drive down Ridgeway with the lights overhead--it's like stepping into a Dr. Suess book. Just absolutely magical, I don't care how old you are.

(Plus, it only works because the neighbors come together and do it. I really like that social-capital-building aspect of it, too.)

They've also started a blog to track the trend and teach others how to make the balls:

(Last year, I helped make a few to be used in a part of downtown....wow, did my fingers hurt! I've decided I really hate chicken wire...)
