To each his own, but with some planning, I could book a week in Hawaii for that amount. I will never understand why that works for some, but I will also never tell someone how to spend their own money.

Geeze - Hotels are just insanely expensive now I guess. The Hilton about 1/2 a mile away from Universal (which looks closer) if you plan out at all is $335 for a night, 79,000 pts, or a FNC. These are where the rewards really work IMO. But the guy paid $70 more I think simply for the location (which is debatable as to which is better), or at least he didn't say he selected the Sheraton for the "quality". He did move for the second night to get a cheaper rate... And he said he thought that ended up being a mistake. I also don't know with the quotes if they mean front line price on the app or post taxes. Of course, he also for some insane reason did both rideshares and rented a car?!

I think in general, a little better planning - like if you've rented a car, don't rideshare. Actually run the numbers on the hotel next to the one you're considering for location. Consider driving to the place / getting up a little earlier to do so to save hundreds of dollars. That said, he seems to be doing the flight rewards, and I guess that helped as much or more than the hotel costs this time, but forget hotel rewards and there was some savings there.

The biggest thing for me is $250 a person is hard to wrap my head around - IDK if I want to go to any park that much lol. Not having kids saves me soooo much money I guess.

That would be fine if they also didn't complain about how expensive it is -- while showing absolutely no interest in changing how they travel. "Travel is so expensive. Why, I was just adding it up on my fourth full spa day at the Peninsula. I realized I'm spending $40,000 on this five-day trip!"

There's another thread running currently that prompts readers to 'Travel Now! It's just gonna get more expensive in the future!' https://tugbbs.com/forums/threads/travel-now-things-only-go-up-in-price.368168/
I ALWAYS counsel people to travel while they are young and able bodied. Folks who wait 'until they retire', or some other benchmark simply miss the experiences while they can enjoy them.
My (and DW's) parents instilled a love of travel in us from an early age. When we were young, it was a backpack and a pup tent. As needs and resources expanded, we moved from tents to RVs to timeshares and cruises and guided tours to independent travel just to see some new territory. Keep it up. Nobody can steal your memories.

I subscribe to this philosophy. Can't wait till I am retired. Not sure how my health would be like. But I have to assess my available resources. This is where timeshares comes in for accommodations. Just started last year but so far have accumulated some incredible cost savings. How else can I score a stay in a 1 bedroom 2 bath grand luxxe (RV) for $500 a week? Or a 4 bed 4 bath Massanuten week stay for $550?
Maxing out Google flights to score lower fares. Hoping I could score better flight deals.

I am not that familiar with Universal Hollywood, but one-day tickets are the most expensive way to visit. In addition, flying across the country to spend one day at a park seems ridiculous.

It almost seems like this family tried to spend the most money possible on their trip to either show off or write this article.

Last year my wife and I took a 4 day trip to Orlando - I think we spend about the same amount. However, that included 3 nights hotel (at Margaritaville Orlando) - 2 days at Disney Parks and attending Halloween Horror at Universal - with the VIP tour package. (which was around $800 by itself).

We really went just for Halloween Horror - but decided it made no sense to travel for just one day - so we added the food and wine festival at Epcot (OVERATED!) and Disney Studios so we could check out star wars land (which was awesome).

if you've rented a car, don't rideshare.
In Los Angeles it is sometimes cheaper to take a rideshare and skip paying for parking, especially theme park parking for $35. The Sheraton Universal is extremely close to the theme park, so the math might have worked. Even if it doesn't work, it would be a lot easier to take a rideshare to the park.

But there is this little issue of limited vacation time while working. I would love to travel more right now, but I don't have endless vacation time from work.

I just actually question why they bothered renting a car for a 1 day trip to a theme park and back to the airport TBH. In cities I either have driven to the city and have my own car, or else I really usually prefer to rideshare / taxi / subway etc (except Las Vegas, that setup was the worst of all possible worlds IMO).

I'd guess this was more towards people who just say across the board "I'm going to travel once I retire", not people taking some trips while they're younger. This ties into a lot of my calculations around saving / spending / debt etc - some common wisdom IMHO assumes you'll live a long, healthy, active retirement. This is more common now than 50 or 100 years ago, but it's far from certain. This may be the one area where I do fit more Millennial than others in that I'm kind of over stuff and more interested in experiences. As I get older, there's less and less stuff I could comfortably do, so a lot of it is do it while I *can*. In some ways I wish I'd started 15 years ago.

Yes. it isn't easy to fit in for regular working folks, but there are long weekends and sometimes one can use flex-time or comp time to build in an extra day here and there. In our working years, I worked into high seniority with my employers, so I could stretch out what vacation I was given, and my wife had her own law firm and was able to block out time for herself. Our grown kids are able to do some remote 'working' and use comp time to stretch weekends. Not every trip has to be a full week. Planes fly every hour.

This doesn't exist where I work. Years ago a different employer allowed employees to "buy" time off up to two weeks a year. I wish I had that option now.

This is why I'm so +1000 for remote work TBH. I can save vacation time if a day is rainy, or if my travel companions don't get going till noon I can work a half day.

So sorry for your situation. Whenever someone tries to convince me that they, or I, am 'indispensable', I use the analogy of sticking your hand into a bucket of water. Then pull your hand out and see how long it takes for the water to fill the space your hand was.

Travel when you can. It makes you a better employee too.

Don't be. The end of my working career is within a reasonable distance.

And I know that I'm not indispensable, but I need to get my finances where I want them before I retire.

A lot of remote jobs require that the employee be online during business hours. I work from home most of the time, but flying to a vacation and sitting in a timeshare kitchen with a laptop all day isn't appealing. If your employer allows you to work early or late in the day, you're lucky.
