They missed two of my favorites for leaf-peepers:

-- The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad from Bryson City, NC, which offers scenic train excursions through the North Carolina mountains along Nantahala and Tuckasegee Rivers. They have special event trains, like the Polar Express.

-- The Cass Scenic Railroad in West Virginia (located about 2.5 hrs West of Massanutten) - a train ride to the overlook at Bald Knob, the third highest point in West Virginia.
