Facebook Marketplace (or why?!)

We helped our DS sell a bunch of household items and furniture on FB Marketplace when the buyers of his house decided 2 weeks before closing that they did not want all the furniture and items that they initially said they did. DH had already moved what he wanted and what would fit down to his new house in Florida and we had to move the remainder of the items out of the old house fast. We had so many people seem very anxious to buy the stuff, set up a time to come, then never show up -or they would show up hours later and wonder why nobody was home. DH and I had to drive 30 mins to meet the buyers at DS's house and it really ticked us off that they would do such things. Very frustrating!

A couple who were buying a big rather expensive item said they couldnt get the cash but would do an e-transfer (Canadian form of Venmo) as soon as they loaded it on their trailer. DH had an uneasy feeling and said no, it isnt leaving the house until you transfer the money. They were adamant that they needed to load it first to make sure it fit (we could see it would easily fit). I was on the phone with our DS while he waited the transfer to go through and sure enough the first transfer didnt, but the guys were starting to carry the item out as soon as the guy hit send on his phone. DS told me to halt them as the money didnt go through which we did, then they did 2 transfers of half the amount each, presumably from different accounts, and those went through.

I still use Craigslist, bought a propane smoker last year for $50, came with a propane tank.
My sister seems insistant that CL has way more scams than FB Marketplace but IDK. I did contact the first woman and offered $300 for the attachments, but she wanted $450 and IDK, I guess she obviously thinks they're worth more than I do, yet also wants them out of her basement - good luck to her. I'll probably move on with my life and keep an eye out for another sort of local seller of the scroll saw and order the sanding disc from eBay eventually if I don't find a deal in some combo somewhere with other attachments. The one I got has a belt sander so IDK how much I'd need a disc sander anyway.

What's funny is she just sent me some AI valuation for the attachments online, which is fine, but doesn't mean eBay or whatever sold them, especially when shipping is freight or +$110 or so if it can be FedEx... Local pick up limits her I think, but anyway I'm done trying to help her our such as I could. Maybe in a few weeks she'll get someone else to get it IDK (She said it'd already fell through once before us).

Zuckerberg is such a jerk when he pisses away 80 Billion on the failed Metaverse.

He's a jerk for a lot of reasons. But basically he drank too much of his own Kool-Aid. Everything he'd done up to Meta was "Midas touch" territory. And he fell for the trap that all his ideas are billion dollar ideas.

See: Musk and Twitter; Bezos and the Wall St. Journal; everything Jo Rowling did after finishing the Harry Potter series. And it goes back forever: Steve Jobs and the Apple Lisa; Mark Twain and his failed investments; Ross Perot passing up the opportunity to buy Microsoft for next to nothing.

The only seriously wealthy person who is doing it right by my estimation: Nick Hanauer. Made his pile and didn't surround himself with yes men. Got out of the rat race and is just doing his thing.

I gave up on CL a few years ago when it got top heavy in scams. Tried the marketplace with some success but quite honestly it makes my wife uneasy having total strangers come to our house to exchange cash for goods. I’m also not a fan of meeting people in a neutral location. Have done it successfully but still not comfortable with it. So I have basically stayed with old faithful (eBay). Their seller fees are high but I’ve only had one problem with them in over 12 years that was eventually resolved. I try and limit my marketplace transactions to large items that are usually not mailed and use eBay for all others.

Ah, that reminds me! I should clean out the garden ornaments in the potting shed from the previous owners... FB Marketplace? Maybe. If I do, it will be for free. I like to list things that might still have value that I don't want to throw in the trash or take to GW. I've got some new items to take to ReStore and some clothes & household items to donate...

I've had good success with FBMP but it's got to be something worth my while, like when I divested of most of my furniture before moving. It seems a lot more accountable than CL which is anonymous. The trick about FB is to look at the profile and ignore the bots and weirdos. I had 100% success rate with pick up and brought a lot of joy to my sellers. I wouldn't ask a lot. One lady paid me more than I asked because she liked the piece so much. I was basically disposing of things and asking to haul it away.

Maybe Warren Buffet? Though IDK, he's mostly an investor.

I am generally only using FBM or considering CL for stuff that isn't reasonably shipable as a buyer anyway. eBay stuff with $100+ shipping or "make your own freight arrangements" doesn't appeal that much lol. I have yet to ever try and sell anything on eBay though I shop there a lot.

Hello jp10558,

I do not have a Shopsmith. I have a drill press, a table saw, a track saw, and a sliding compound miter saw. The one thing that detracts from the enjoyment of making stuff is the clean-up of the saw dust. To control the saw dust as it is formed, whenever I use the table saw, track saw, or miter saw, I connect a shop-vac to the dust port. Of course, I also the shop-vac to clean-up all of the saw dust that does not get directed to the dust ports. The problems are: 1) The dust rapidly coats the inside surface of the disposable fine-particle filter bag inside the shop-vac and then the shop-vac loses suction, and 2) The shop-vac fine-particle disposable filter bags are not cheap. Anyway, last year I purchased a portable Dewalt dust separator off of Amazon. This dust separator is used in conjunction with your shop-vac. If you are a woodworker, I can highly recommend this accessory because, a year later, my shop-vac is still on the same filter bag with very little loss of suction. The Dewalt part # for the 6-gallon dust separator is DXVCS002 and is available on Amazon. Here is a YouTube video that shows it in action:

Many local police stations offer a parking area for FB/Ebay transactions that are monitored.

Nice score Jeff. I scored a limited edition 2012 Budweiser electric smoker on Craigslist a couple of years ago. It was never used, in the box and had the Bud cover. I think it was $35 for a $120 smoker.

Now that its pay to play selling cars on Craigslist there are loads of cars on the FB Marketplace.
