Expiring points... What should I do?

I bought into Club Wyndham a couple of years ago with the intent of travel after I retired. Well, Retirment didn't last long, and now the year has passed by, and I have 410,000 points set to expire at the end of September and don't have the time to use any of the points before then. What can I do, if anything, to keep these from just going away?

Can you book something with the points for a future trip? Or extend the expiration date? Or deposit them ? Contact Club Wyndham to see what your options are?

To answer @silentg's questions: Any trip has to start within the current UY (so, before the end of September). They can be deposited to RCI, and you will have (at least) two years to use them for exchanges. That's what I would do.

Unless you start planning now, you will have the same problem next year, so start planning next year's trips right this second! That's the point of owning a timeshare, to force you to take vacations.

Thanks! I will look at doing the transfer to RCI. I have also seen that availability is about a year out and have planned trips for next August already.

Similar question. We just purchased points resale. Our use year is biennial, Jan1 2024. We booked one vacation in October, but have 239,000 points that we can't deposit to RCI (they had to be deposited by March), even though we just got the points allocated to us in July. What can we do with our leftover points before they expire since depositing in Rci is no longer an option? Can they be put in II (I have a membership there)?

You can deposit to RCI at any point before the end of your use year—in your case on or before December 31st, even for resale points. I would not wait until the very last minute to avoid login problems etc.

The end of March deadline is for moving points forward to another use year internally.

Depositing points in one of two future use years and depositing points in RCI are two different things.

For depositing/moving points to a fututue use year, as a resale or non VIP owner you have to do that within the first three months of your use year. There's a $39 fee when you do it online, $49 when you call in to have a rep do it for you, and you select which of the two future use years you want the points in. However any remaining housekeeping credits you have left for the current use year won't follow those points. Housekeeping credits are $175 if you have to buy them. Each reservation of 2-14 nights uses one housekeeping credit. Unit size doesn't matter.

Depositing points in RCI gives you two years from the date of the deposit to use them. There's no fee to deposit points in RCI but there will be a $299 exchange fee for each week you book with those points. RCI has thousands of resorts in this country and other countries that you can book. Most of the availbility will be full week stays starting on Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Some resorts might only have one of those days their weeks start, some two and some all three. There are some resorts that do offer less than full week stays but I'm not sure if there's a reduced exchange fee or it's always $299 with the Wyndham/RCI account bookings. It doesn't say but there is a reduced excange fee with regular RCI accounts. However you do pay a housekeeping fee for less than full week stays.

It's best not to wait until the last day of your use year to do either. The website can get overloaded and the call wait time can be really long. Sometimes the calls get disconnected and you have to call back and start the wait time all over. Sometmes you can't get through before the call center closes.

II isn't an option. There are a very few owners who still have something with an affiliation in II. Even if what you own orginally had that I'm guessing it would be lost when it was transferred to the new owner..

Another option in the “can’t hurt to ask” vein is to call and ask if they can give you a one-time exception to the points deposit deadline because your contract came in too late. The worst they can say is no.

Great advice. And guess what? It worked. They gave us a "one time exception" to roll over our remaining points to the next use year. So glad!

There is always another couple of options that aren’t as desirable, 1 gift someone a vacation, though options will be limited to what’s available, 2 let club Wyndham rent the points out but there is risk of not getting compensated and the compensation rate is t great, or 3 convert points into maintainance fees which also isn’t a great value but better then losing points entirely.

Luckily they let you roll them over, but at the point amounts you have you may run into the issue again if you’re not able to travel enough to use the points. One way to burn off “extra” points is book available presidential reserve rooms or book larger sized rooms and invite family or friends on that trip.

Would it be best to call Wyndham and do these things as opposed to online? Since I'm not looking at being able to use my points in the next few months, I could use them to pay my Maintenance fees and/or transfer to RCI. Do I call Wyndham or RCI to transfer to RCI?
Thanks.
