Exchange Options When Cancelling

We exchanged our MOC lockoff for a lockoff in Tahoe for August 1-8. Unfortunately, I am ill and we need to cancel.

The Marriott desk said my only option at this time is to do a $99 exchange to another Marriott property (or a higher fee for a non-Marriott property) or give it to a friend for $39. The exchange has to pick the place and time now - I have been told I can't just pay for the exchange a call in at another time to select time and place [Not ready to pick a date and place unless I absolutely have to.]

I believe that I have read here that one can pay a fee and hold the right to reserve somewhere else within a 60 day period. Am I right? Do I have other options?

I would appreciate your suggestions.

The rep is being generous. Cancelling an exchange within 7 days of check in results in getting no refund and no alternate exchange.

Good reason why one should get insurance.
