I put on OGS on for Jan 31-Feb 7 in Hawaii (2016).

I'm using a Marriott studio (MGR) to pickup an extra week (might not check in until Wednesday depending on vacation schedule) before our Waiohai.

I'm open to Maui Westin or MOC or Ko Olina or Westin Princeville--or Waiohai as well. I only need a studio, but prefer having kitchen, so I'll probably e-trade to a 1or 2 br if it comes up in flex.

My real question: I keep matching studios (Ko Olina, WPOVR etc...) and I'm not sure whether I should hold out a while longer or snag one and just instant-trade as they become available.

Any thoughts? What resort to 'hold-out' for? Wait until 70 days until confirming OGS? or ???

thanks.

Got a WPORV studio on the hook I need to dump tonight.

If you deposited a studio, you are going to get matched with a studio.

You can only request a larger unit with a studio, at resorts that only have larger units.

So at resorts with Studios - you are going to get a studio.

The Westin's have nice little kitchenettes with everything except an oven, so not just a hotel room.

+1 for what Denise said. You can add E plus and try to trade up closer to your check in date, but most likely you're going to keep matching the studios.

Of course, I can only request a studio, I guess if I match a resort without studios...then I get what I can match, no? Is there something that prevents studios from matching to larger units at resorts with studios?? There's a thread on here somewhere that indicates trade-ups from II outside of flex. My real limit is that I'm seeking a Sunday check-in. That eliminates a few.
I may re-snag that WPORV studio (the studios are nice then?) and then hope for a good instant eplus later.

Of course, in reality, I'm planning on flexchanging into something wonderful just prior to check-in. But, we'll see.

Thanks for any advice--I have no experience with II trades.

It's just unlikely that you will get an exchange to a larger unit in a top resort with a studio:

-II assigns trading power to deposits - your studio probably does not have enough trading power for a larger unit.

-Everyone with an OGS, with a larger unit than yours, has more trading power/high priority than you do, and will be matched first.

-It's late to get an exchange, because the bulk space banking is probably already done for those dates.

I'd confirm a trade into a resort I wouldn't mind staying in (I like the studios at WPORV with their mini-kitchen and in-room laundry), and buy ePlus. Then I'd look for an retrade into a larger unit right up until check-in.

Rob, yes the WPORV studios are nice. They only have a kitchenette, but quite do-able IMO for informal meals. We ate out or did take-out half the time.

If I were you I would take a matched studio and hold out for an ePlus retrade.

In August or September this year, I did get my studio matched to a 2BR Ko'Olina in December 2015 through OGS outside of Flex.

I thought so....I was looking to see who posted that.
I was 'kinda 'hopin for a late match with Marriott preference (say 70-50 days out) and then use the eplus inside of 14 days if something 'wow' popped up. If I snag the WPOVR studio now, I'll have 3 weeks of 'insane searching' on II waiting for flex to happen.

I do love the game though.
Funny enough, you would not believe the amazing mini-bulk drop that happened last night around 3am. I was online (working nights) and just happened to see the drop hit. LOTS of good inventory in prime Jan/Feb whale season.

dang it. somebody just grabbed the WPOVR studio for Sunday. Guess that answers that question.

I search Hawaii every day - mostly just for grins. Studios aren't great traders in II. It requires a lot of searching to trade up from a studio. Every once in awhile studios exchange like larger units (I suspect some kind of error on the II side), but then it gets corrected and trading power goes back to normal, which isn't nearly as fun. At least you have Marriott preference.

Btw, we travel to Kauai next week and I have been searching daily for some kind of uptrade - nothing. I am using a SDO one bedroom. No worries - I have a two bedroom Lawai Beach Resort unit in the Alii building so I am not complaining - I just thought that something great would pop up in the last 14 days but so far it's been a bust. I'm surprised because it's not high season.

My red week studio at DSV I has been much more powerful than I have anticipated. It has regularly booked NCV for April/May each year and that is when I need the week. The 2BR Ko Olina matched at more than 90 days out was a complete surprise. I put in the request and the same night it got matched.

I already threw back a Ko Olina studio and the WPOVR studio; both on were Saturday check-ins. The Sunday check-in WPORV e just got nabbed. If it comes back again, I think I'll grab it. I was secretly hoping for Ko Olina. If I could grab that, I might be able to snag another 1br/studio and end up with a 2br--in case our friends decide to come early and spend time on Oahu with us as well (as Kauai). But, that's another story...
I'll report back.

I'm only using a white DSVII studio so I don't have as much trading power as your week, but I was able to get NCV for Sept 2016 and I was very happy with that trade.

Studios just require a bit more work and patience.

Good luck on your search Taterhed - keep us posted!

I really wish it was a Saturday check-in....

My goal was to get the Lagoons or Hyatt Maui 3br at the last minute--then I was going to do some serious nose-rubbing "I told you so's..."

maybe next time....we'll see (fingers crossed)

One other thing to keep in mind with II - you can't hold a unit but you can cancel within 24 hours by calling in. So you can make an exchange and give yourself a day to think about it.

I'll let you know if I see that 1/31 week pop up again.

The 1/31 studio at WPORV is back now and not under preference so you should be able to grab it with your Marriott studio if you still want it.

I've been watching Hawaii pretty closely too, because we go back in a little over a month. I have most of our weeks booked, but am still hoping for an E-Plus upgrade for some of them. For MKO, especially, I've seen a ton of studios but the larger units seem to ONLY be coming a week or two out and even then they've been relatively rare. Nothing like back in May when we went. We were able to get THREE consecutive 2BR exchanges then.

Me too. It is much easier trading with a one bedroom. But sometimes I need the Marriott preference. Did you see the Interval thread where a tugger was able to snag a week at Waiohai with a marriott studio in January? Great trade.

Taterhed, I'm glad that you got the week you needed. Now add eplus and start playing the tradio game!

Awesome! I think you have a fair chance of retrading to the Waiohai or Lagoons, but don't count out WPORV as it is really a beautiful resort (and as others have said the studio is very comfortable). I lucked out and got the Lagoons for Nov 14, but I had Marriott preference.
