Not sure I'd agree with "Best Ever." Maybe the best in their time. Maybe the best among carriers in that time compared with other Navies. The Nimitz-class nuke carriers that came afterwards were pretty amazing ships. An Essex-class displaced 35,000 tons. Nimitz-class warships displaced 95,000 tons. USS Nimitz (CVN-68), just a single ship, was alleged to have the capacity to carry "an equivalent of all the armament used in ALL of World War II - by BOTH sides." That's a lot of firepower.

That brings back some fond memories. My father was stationed with Maritime Air Command (MAC) in Halifax from 1958 to 1961. MAC was in control of all RCAF maritime patrol aircraft on both coasts and also coordinated operations with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN).

At the time, the RCN still had one aircraft carrier in its fleet (HMCS Bonaventure), a British Majestic-class carrier. I had the opportunity to go out to sea once on "The Bonnie" on a day-training exercise off the coast of Nova Scotia, which was a lot of fun. It was arranged as a special treat for the children of military families stationed in Halifax. So I can claim to have a little (very little!) bit of experience with aircraft carriers.

During the time we were stationed there, USS Essex did a port visit. My Dad arranged to have us taken on a tour. I enjoyed it very much and was intrigued by some of the differences. HMCS Bonaventure only displaced about 16,000 tons, less than half of the 34,000 tons of the USS Essex. I was suitably impressed with the size of the Essex and its reputation. At the time, it was the largest naval vessel I had ever seen.

Thanks for reviving the memories!
